Sub Suggestions

I may be getting a 10" sub. If I get one, it would probably be in a 4080 box. I was wondering what 10" sub ya'll think sounds the best for the money. I don't want a lot of bass, but I want it to sound good playing rap/hip-hop, i.e. Nelly, Young Jeezy, Youngbloodz, etc. I also want it to sounds good when I play my rock, i.e. Disturbed, Green Day, etc. And if you could also consider the rattling, because I would like to avoid the cost of Dynamatting. I was thinking about the Kicker KKR 05C104. It's 300 watt max. Or I could step it up and get the Kicker CVR10. Which has 600 watts of power. Or, just go with an MTX that is more expensive that only has 300 watts. Then, go with an 800 watt Pioneer mono amp or an Alpine 600 watt mono amp. Which combination do you think is the best?

I'm not a big fan of MTX just because I've seen a lot of them blow easily. I think Kicker subs are great. I also just bought an Infinity Perfect 12" sub for my gf's car off ebay. Pretty good deal, $100plus s/h, used to be $250, now $170 in crutchfield. I'm pretty happy with it. I put it in a ported box since she wanted it louder and doesn't car as much about sq. I would prefer a sealed box since I like tighter bass, but the sub itself seems good.

For the money: Boston Acoustics G5 or G2. I had a higher end MTX for 6 years and it peformed flawlessly. With subs, you generally get what you pay for. I auditioned the Bostons even though I decided to not put a sub in the 8 (lose golf club space), but if I was gonna buy anything now, it would be the Boston G5

Bang for the buck I would still go JL AUDIO.

The 10W1 with 150 - 200 watts behind it will work very well. By your profile, I see your car has the Bose. (A 10W0 or 10W3v2 are also good ideas.)

I had the Bose for a while with one 4080 box, a JL 10W3v2-D4, and a MTX 311D and even at 310 Watts it was MORE than enough bass to overpower the Bose system. I won't say I was slammin' bass but it was plenty loud. (I probably never used the full 310 Watts.)

What you want more than anything is low frequency extension and the JL's have always done it in a very linear way. Not only do they have very good xmax - it comes with a very well controlled motor and suspension.

Ps. I still have the amp and mounting board. I have since gone with a very ellaborate Dolby 5.1 set-up.

Where do you buy JL's at? The only commercial place I know of is Hifi Buys and they don't sell 10W0's or 10W1's.

They should be able to order them

Do you think that the 600 watt Kicker sub would be too much for what I am looking for? I have been told that Kicker's are great subs and can handle abuse and don't blow as easily and that is a major thing for me. I know the JL's would be awesome, but the prices are too expensive for me.

I think I have narrowed it down between 2 amps as well... the Alpine MRP-M350, which at best buy is $199.99 and the Pioneer GM7100M which is $179.99 at Circuit City. They are both mono subs. The Pioneer gives 800 watts of power and the Alpine gives 700. I have noticed that the Alpine is a popular sub, but the Pioneer sounds pretty good too. Your opinion would really help me out! Thanks!

i just put in two rockford fosgate p2 12's in a sealed box and they sound with the bose system at all sound levels... and i can still fit my golf clubs in the trunk no problem

RX8 Zoom Zoom,

Granted that you got your car for your 16th birthday I can see how you can be fooled by the claims that many amplifiers have. That "800 Watts" and "700 Watts" are peak Watts and don't have any real meaning. The MRP-350 is really only a 350 RMS Watt amp (which is still a lot of power). One thing that I don't like about the Alpine is the bass boost is centered at 50Hz. That is too high and will add more boom and not a lot of bass.

A similar amp but more powerful model is the MTX 421D which you can get at Crutchfield or other stores since it is last years model.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-EfEgUTH...&display=L#Tab

It is conservatively estimated to be 420 Watts RMS (into 2 Ohms) and has a variable eq at 40Hz not 50Hz - and an input for a remote bass control. Otherwise it is a very similar amp.

I would strongly recomend the 421D (or even the 311D) over the Alpine and especially the Pioneer. It's intelligent turn-on circuitry also works well - I had the 311D and it turned on and off very consistantly.

As far as the JL sub is concerned, you will have to buy from an Authorized JL Audio dealer and can't buy them over the internet with a valid warranty. (now, if you don't over do the Watts, you shouldn't ever need the warranty, but that is up to you.)

Most modern name brand amps are quality. The difference is not extreme but it is there. The sub is similar - I have never been dissapointed with JL audio and I can't say that about many other subs out there. There are probably other good bargain subs out there, but without a really good professional comparison review, I wouldn't chance it.
