Stereo Replacement

The RX8 stereo is integrated into the dash. I'm going to want to replace the stereo with aftermarket parts.

Does anybody know if the stereo will have line outs? I read that the components is the same as the Mazda6 and is part of the modular stereo line. If the stereo has line out, this will allow ppl to as least customize their stereos to some degree without having to fabricate new center console paneling.

Second, does anybody know what is in the compartment below the AC controls? It looks like a storage compartment, perfect for for fitting an aftermarket head.

I really wish Mazda would not use special custom stereos. I'm thinking about getting the touring package for the Bose system, but then again, the bose system probably would not satisfy my need for better sound and that would only be a waste of my money spending it on the Bose. However, if it's not possible to install my own head unit, then I will have to make due with the Bose.

Not to mention from the pictures, the stereo is a single changer.

I think what I will probably do is just get the Bose system and upgrade the components. By having the bose system, I will already have the prerequisite grills, openings, and mounting hardware. That way, I can just buy better speakers, amps, and subwoofers and replace the pieces in the stock locations. If I want to change the head unit, I can put it i the compartment below the AC control.

Yeah, after seeing the car in person, I can guarentee that's it's going to be 1 royal pain in the rear-end.... Not as bad as the Mazda 6 though. They're going to have an even tougher time....

it is not possible to replace the oem radio with an aftermarket unit. reason for this is that the audio electronics on the rear of the center panel are integrated with those of ventilation and aircon.

Well if that's the case Mazda has some explaining to do.. WTF?!@?! Does it at least have pre amp outs? :(

Impossible? Gimme a break. It's not going to be a Circuit City job to replace the radios right away, but with a little custom work, you should be able to get a double-DIN unit in there (or a single-DIN and some gauges if you'd prefer). Unlike the Taurus of the past, the climate controls are already lined up by themselves (as opposed to being "mixed in" with the stereo controls), which makes the whole job easier.

As far as the "modular", it's not the same as a home component systems. That simply refers to a couple of interchangeable pieces inside the head unit itself. Don't expect RCA outputs, or any other easily connected items. BOSE units with odd speaker arrangements are notoriously difficult to integrate with aftermarket amps/speakers.

As far as having the "requisite holes", there isn't so much of a need to get the upgraded BOSE for that. Check out the sizes of the speakers which will be installed. You'll end up having to install custom baffles anyway to fit standard aftermarket speakers (unless you can find a 9" speaker to fit your tastes). Meanwhile, you rarely see any cars where they have different interior parts for different stereo levels. It's easy to order a couple of pieces from the parts dealer if you really need them, so you don't have to spend extra money on items that you will be ditching anyway.

Meanwhile, this is going to the Stereo forum...
