Silly question for loose stock shiftknob (stripped threads).

The plastic threads in my practically pristine shiftknob is stripped. Therefore, it will not screw in tightly. Damn thing spins as I shift. I tried two part epoxy with no success. Any ideas? Not looking to spend extra bucks just for a new shiftknob either.

Do you have any thread left on it at all? Have you tried thread locker?

Concrete 2 part apoxy might do the trick lol

SayNoToPistons 10-06-2013 04:07 AM

Little to no thread left. Thread locker won't work as it requires threads...

I used Devcon 5 Minute two part Epoxy, and they didn't work.

Try to find some shim stock, superglue that to the shifter, then superglue the knob to the shim.
Only other thing I can think of other than buying a new shifter is to try to find a heli-coil that will fit the knob & thread the shifter with a die nut.
*edit*
Read that wrong. Disregard heli-coil. Stripped knob, duh.:(

you could try drilling out a larger hole in the knob, then re-threading it and adding a larger diameter piece over top the shifter.

This sounds like one of those problems that the solution far exceeds the effort ;)

Getting a new shift knob is the easy answer....

I think the OEM plastic might be nylon...so likely nothing is going to stick to it. You could try using a soldering iron to see if it melts.....if it does then you could get it plastic welded closed and re-drill and tap it

You can drill and helicoil it the same as any hole. Helicoil in soft materials like plastic, aluminum etc. will give you much longer service life. There are also plastic thread restorer kits where you prepare and fill the hole and then insert the lightly oiled threaded shaft into it and let it harden. It will unscrew later.

Thanks. I have thought about helicoil, but that was my last resort being that most m10x1.25 helicoil kits alone cost at least $30.

Already bought a VooDoo knob. Figured since my stock knob is pristine minus the stripped threads, it would be worth my time/effort to save it.

pretty sure I have the M10 x 1.25 kit I can send you, just send it back when you're done.

Conveniently, I have a problem with my shift knob as well.

In my case, I tried unscrewing my shift knob to clean the console but from what I saw, the leather upper is spinning only. The knob itself doesn't move. Any idea on how to remove the shift knob in this case?
