Reverse camera installation

I just got an Alpine IVA-W505 that I'm getting ready to install in my '04 RX-8 (MT, no factory nav). I also happen to have some generic backup camera lying around, so I thought I'd try it out. I've searched all over for wiring info that allows me to not run a wire all the way back to the reverse lights, but from that I can tell its unavoidable without either an AT or factory Nav. Is that correct?

The other thing, for people who have installed these things...where did you mount it? I thought about perhaps inside the rear rotor emblem, but I think that's probably too low. I don't want it to be any more visible than possible because I can't imagine it looking very attractive.

Do a search, someone here put the backup camera in the keyhole for the trunk. Not sure I'd recommend it since if something happens to the electric opener it's not coming open. I think they went through the other stuff they had to do about wiring.

It just occurred to me that if I do this I will be running the video feed from the camera at the rear of the car up to the HU anyway...so what's the diff, might as well run the reverse light at the same time! Heh...

Yes, the keyhole is popular.

Don't worry about the opener failing, in that unlikely event, you could go in thru the pass-thru and pull the emergency release.

FWIW, I used a rear camera license plate frame from PAC. Works just fine.

Now THAT looks interesting...

I paid $250 at the local install shop, but you could get it for about $150 online. No heavy lifting for installation as I recall, but I didn't do it myself....I imagine as long as you can get the wire through the rear bumper cover it should be a piece of cake.

I installed my reverse camera last week. Just splice into the back up light in the trunk and run the wire up to the radio. You're going to be running the camera wire up to the head unit anyways so it's not anymore extra work.
