Plastic ring around shift boot

I hate the plastic silver ring around the shift boot. Are there replacements? I really just want it to be black. See the below pic. The pic is from an Ebay auction of a boot I'm thinking of ordering.

I don't know the first thing about painting something like this. I'd hate to ruin the thing and have it look worse. What type of paint would I use? I saw a thread where someone used vinyl for the accents to the left and right, I wonder if i could do the same thing for this, or if it would end up not fitting. Being a round piece, i'd think that wouldn't turn out well.

If your going to buy a new one, then what do you have to loose? Try painting it, and if you jack it up buy the eBay one.

I covered mine in 3m di-noc carbon fiber vinyl. Ring is actually really easy to take out and work with. Use a good gloss black and it'll make a world of difference as well if you want to go that route as posted above.
