Opinions on Infinity...

I think Im going with Infinity Reference speakers to replace my factory speakers in my base system. With that in mind Im still searching for a nice sub setup and I know that a number of folks around here went with the Infinity Basslink. I would probably be more inclined to go with all Infinity products if possible. What is everyones opinions on these products. Also looking over the Basslink I came across this :

The measurements for this is supposed to be 40-3/8"W x 14-3/8"H x 6-7/16"D

Would this fit in the trunk?Infinity

I replaced all of my speakers with Infinity speakers--pushing them with a 4 channel Audiobahn Amp--50 watts to each speaker--it is LOUD. I am planning on adding a sub myself as well. I thought about the basslink, but I want a more custom setup. My amp is flush mounted into the spare tire well--I plan on mounting another audiobahn amp next to it and push a 8" sub. I am probably gonna go with an Audiobahn 8".

With my personal experience with Infinity, I am not their biggest fan. Not that they aren't built well, but how they are designed doesn't match how I normally put together systems. For low to moderate power levels, they are just fine. For high power levels, they are way too harsh and too bright for me.

I replaced factory speakers with Infinity Reference components in a factory system with no more than 20 watts rms per channel, and they sounded great. When I added an amp with 35-40 watts rms, they were too harsh, too bright, and the midbass greatly suffered. I've listened to other cars, and with Infinity's fed that kind of power, they don't sound good to me at all.

But that's me. The one thing that I am sure of is that the sound of these speaker sets change drastically, depending on the amount of power you feed them. So when you are test listening to them, make sure that you are listening to them at the power levels that you plan on feeding them.

ANyone know if this larger basslink will fit? My car is in for service and I can't measure it. If not, I'm thinking of going for the regular basslink. One review I read of the regualr basslink said adding a capacitor improved the tightness and quality of the bass. Also anyone know if it is required to run a dedicated line to the battery, or can we pull power from another location?

That larger unit is the Basslink-T I think...designed for hatchbacks, SUVs, etc. The smaller, "regular" Basslink is IMO a better fit for our cars, and again IMO, it puts out plenty of bass. I'm currently running Infinity Reference speakers off the base head unit (at some point I will add an amp, so it will be interesting to see if my perceptions match Sputnik's...I hope they do not :-) ) but for now, I have to crank the Basslink way down to avoid overpowering the stock head unit.

As far as the capacitor is concerned, wouldn't that only be necessary if you are pushing the current limits your alternator is capable of? I've personally never found the "car show stuff" like capacitors in these installations to be worth much...then again I tend to keep my volume set at "Fairly Loud" rather than "F---ing Ridiculous" so maybe that's the reason.

I know its "not a good idea" and I do intend to fix it some day...but I have my Basslink wired into the rear accessory power port. Nothing ever gets warm, and like I mentioned, I have it cranked down a bit. I did this as a temporary solution, but then I've been too lazy to fix it. I'll just say this: For my purposes, this seems to be safe enough...but I don't really recommend it.
