Nexus 7 Installed In Dash

This looks pretty cool and seems really functional. What do you guys think of this in the 8?

paimon.soror 08-07-2012 09:22 AM

Honestly dont see a point, especially for you S1 guys. Far easier to just replace your nav screen with a liliput screen and get a raspberry pi and load ICS on it

It looks interesting and I like the idea of having a small tablet in the dash. I do not need a head unit when a tablet can do so much more.

Here is review of the Nexus 7

Transform your Nexus 7 into a car tech powerhouse | The Car Tech blog - CNET Reviews

Data-logging software such as Torque and Torque Pro can transform the Nexus 7 into a secondary instrument cluster for monitoring your car's cornering G-forces, acceleration, 0-60, and quarter-mile times. With the help of a Bluetooth OBD-II connection like the $99 PLX Kiwi Bluetooth, the Nexus can even give you a look into the inner workings of your engine and its sensors.

ShellDude did this a long time ago.

And the Nexus doesn't have an SD card slot, so...Google.... you failed.

pdxhak 08-07-2012 10:02 AM

It does not have to be the Nexus right? It can be any tablet that meets your needs.

firebirdude 08-07-2012 10:03 AM

Which is why I linked you to ShellDude's thread.

I'd also MUCH rather the tablet be in place of the stock headunit versus the OEM navi housing (which not everyone has). Shorter reach and it's harder for police/thieves to see while you're driving around. Full motion video in view of the driver is still illegal in every state BTW.

ShellDude 08-07-2012 10:07 AM

Lilliput came out with capacitive touch screen? Not sure I follow the benefits, beyond the cool factor, of using a pi.

One of our members is trying the nexus... let's see how it goes!

pdxhak 08-07-2012 10:16 AM

I do not have Nav and have my gauges installed up top so it is not an option for me.

I going through the thread now.

ShellDude 08-07-2012 11:19 AM

Reach is certainly an issue but manageable. Its seems all the aftermarket head units excel in one area but fail miserably in one more others.

firebirdude 08-07-2012 11:32 AM

If I had it to do over again, I'd certainly be hacking up a Metra kit to fit a tablet. Times change quickly and tablets weren't really around when I did my install...... actually, the Metra kit wasn't either. LOL

As for the pi, you'd need to purchase a screen obviously. So where's the cost savings? Where's the advantage?

ShellDude 08-07-2012 11:42 AM

Same here firebirdude. I started with a Liliput mounted in the JDM retractible nav tray with a ton of plumbing thru the console to a mini-itx Via running XP (later intel atom running Win 7) in the rear center storage box.

P2140 for power and my own control software for it... Grom Car2PC adapter, again with my own software.

Cutting over to a tablet solution was a triumphant act of simplification. I still have a 2.5'x2.5'x2.5' box full of all the crap and wire I pulled when I cut over.

pdxhak 08-07-2012 01:27 PM

My only concern with a tablet is the form factor. They are constantly changing and if you have a custom mount set then it could have to be redone.

Tamas 08-07-2012 08:51 PM

I would look into a Lenovo A1 due to its offline GPS so that it doesn't require a data subscription for the GPS to work. Plus, now it can also be updgraded to ICS instead of the earlier Gingerbread.

ShellDude 08-07-2012 10:41 PM

There are plenty of Android offline (static maps) navigation apps out there. No need to specialize on the hardware just for maps.

pilotedge 08-17-2012 12:21 PM

I'm currently looking at putting a standard HDMI touchscreen in and hooking up an external android system (maybe a pi). The idea is that as times change I can upgrade the hardware without constantly hacking away....
I'll let you know!

I'm on my way to doing this. I'm trying to decide if I want to make a removable mount for my galaxy tab 2.0 7" or my galaxy note. I pulled out the head unit entirely and am currently using a BT bridge to the amp in my trunk. I've wired the amp to the four in-cabin speakers and a dual 12" subwoofer unit. It's fully functional but ugly. Once I figure out how to mount it and make it pretty, I'll post up here.

Im currently in the process of a Nexus 7 install in my rx8. Putting it in the factory Navigation Unit. Taken it all apart and used a dremel to make space inside where the lcd screen is so the nexus 7 can fit.

Waiting for the Asus Nexus 7 dock to come out (Jan 16) which im gonna take apart and install inside the nav unit cover thingy.

Also im making it removable so making a little strip on the top of the cover flip open so i can pull out the nexus 7 (working on a mechanism/idea for this)

Also with the nexus 7 dock which uses pogo pins and has a micro usb port and aux port at the back i can easily just slide in the nexus 7 and it will start charging and audio will be hooked up with the factory dash instantly.

If anyone else wants to join me or is doing something similar give me a PM or post up here and we can help each other out :)

At first I was sort of against the idea of a tablet in the car, seemed too chessy/ bulky. However the more I see concepts turned into reality and more finished projects with tablets installed, it looks more and more clean. I'm literally about to put in a head unit with a metra kit tomorrow - but I honestly think I'd rather go the tablet route.

Currently working on this mod... figuring out a couple things il keep you posted looking very promising.

Found this over at XDA (mods please forgive the ebay link)

[XENOMIX] CD TABLET SHG-NX4000 CD Player Slot Mount for Tablet PC iPad Navi | eBay

Ordered it this morning. If I like it -- I'm looking for something to shorten the distance between me and the tablet -- I'll seriously consider selling my JDM retractable nav tray.

very keen to see how this turns out.

i have my screen in the nav dash and have been using a couple of mk808 mini pcs. it is still not a simple solution. even with the new mini pc with Bluetooth getting GPS and odb etc to work smoothly is very difficult. plus if i want to stop for petrol i either have to reboot or run the thing off separate battery. i thought about using a nexus phone to drive the system but the nexus 7 tablet is cheaper.

android and usb peripherals aren't 100% reliable so until you can get a mini pc with gps etc built in the tablet is the best way to go i think....

Hey ShellDude, how did you like this slot mount tablet holder? Does the tablet bounce around much? I'm thinking about something similar myself.

Whenever the PI officially gets ICS, or a stable version of Android for that matter. Not that I use one in my car, but I have a Model B and run XBMC on it, works awesome

I put a nexus 7 in my rx8 with a metra kit and put a pioneer Bluetooth head deck in the glove box. The volume and Chanel control is done from the steering controls. All My stored music, movies and navigation is done of the tablet sent bluetooth to the head unit. You can store navigation maps on your tablet so you dont have to be connected to the internet, unless you have service on your tablet. The only Downfall is I don't know what channel the radio is on, or Sirius sat. Pioneer does make a small controler with a display on it for marine use I was thinking of getting. The nexus 7 fits really tight, both vertical and horizontally so any other tablet would have to be the same size or smaller. The way it was I had to shave some plastic from the heater controls and the top vent to make it work.
