Ok, Im a bit confuse now.

I want NaV for my 8, its shinka so thats not an option.

The new one ^^^^^ looks really nice, saw it a while ago when Japan8 first posted it. and I really love it.

is it like, if I buy ^^^^^ I can use some aftermarket headunits say Pionner Nav ? w/o mess up the A/C and factory HU ?

Im really confused now.

Tamas 09-07-2006 01:22 PM

What exactly can be fitted using this unit? A 1-DIN piece?

Japan8 09-07-2006 01:34 PM

This is NOT for aftermarket HEADUNITS. This is for aftermarket NAVIGATION SYSTEMS. Yes there is a difference... a headunit includes radio, CD/DVD and may also include navigation, and are built to 1DIN or 2DIN size specs. A pure navigation system does only that... navigation... like Magellen, Garmin and others. In Japan Mitsubishi, Pioneer, Alpine, etc. offer a nav only system that consists of a car stereo size (1DIN) "CPU" and a 6.5" or 7" screen. This dash panel is for mounting that screen. In Japan, these aftermarket navigation systems are offered as a dealer-installed option and this dash panel is Mazda's better looking replacement for the old "nav tray".

What does this mean to you? It means that you now have a clean way to mount a 7" touchscreen in your dash. This is useful if you intend to build a CarPC which can give you navigation, GB's of Mp3, DVD, DiVX, and more. If you don't want to/don't plan to do a CarPC... well... I don't think that the navigation only systems are available in the US market from Alpine, Pioneer, etc. so you might just be S.O.L.

One of these MIGHT work though...

Add me to the list of "I want that"

Tamas 09-07-2006 02:03 PM

So basically, if I want to mount a retractable 7" touchscreen which has a 1DIN housing, this should be then possible with this panel?
My car PC's CPU would be located somewhere else - all I'm looking for is a way to mount a screen (something similar like this).

How does it look? Does it match the original dash?

I think there is already a slide built into this unit so all you need is an LCD screen for your carcomputer.

But I imagine it could be modified for a hidden 1-din but don't take my word on it and the angle may be way off.

Tamas 09-07-2006 02:21 PM

Thanks Jason - actually, it would be great to get this clarified, along with what size screens is the unit compatible with.
I'm not too hung up on the screen being motorized, if this unit has slides. It might even be better because it's cheaper to buy just the screen.

truemagellen 09-07-2006 02:30 PM

Well based on the pictures of the Nav units for an option in Japan it is simply a screen and then a DVD unit that is off to the side. So I am almost certain the slide is built in and then a screen is added. Based on the catolog it is for 7 inch widscreen screens but I Japan8 or some other Japanese reader would have to clarify.

nycgps 09-07-2006 02:58 PM

so does that mean, in order for me to have *nice* nav I will need :

This New Updated Dash Piece
ANY Aftermarket NAV only system with a standalone 7" screen.

IS that correct ?

truemagellen 09-07-2006 03:13 PM

Yes but don't order a screen yet until I have exact specs on it incase it can fit more or less screen width.

So this can be used with:

a) after market head unit screen
b) carpc screen
c) video screen: tv/video game/dvd player
d) Aftermarket Nav system with external screen.

Any other ideas? Slide out picture frame? Slide out etcha sketch? ;)

nycgps 09-07-2006 03:22 PM

I wonder if the Pioneer AVID D2 will fit.

Theres a special going on, pretty sick deal actually, check it out

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...817031,00.html

SAd thing is the D2 cant play regular DVDs ... I wonder is there a hack or firmware somewhere will do the trick ....

You don't need a 1din (in-dash) monitor with that magellan dash, you would need a normal screen like a Lilliput or Xenarc 7" ...but wait for the correct size, then you'll know wich one fit the best.

I don't have it yet, but i asked to a guy that bought one, it is EXACTLY like the original dash plastic (grey), it changes only the shape to add that 1din hole.
I would higly suggest you to go for the magellan solution (retractile.. ecc.) you will save money on screen and you have a better solution "invisible" when closed), i cannot buy it anymore, cause i've already ordered this one.... my opinion.

PS: note you will have no hole for center speaker (bose system), and it seems there's none on that "magellan" dash... i'll prolly "cut" (phisically) that dash and re-use the black part of the original dash... or just cover the hole with the appropriate audio covering.

N rider89 09-07-2006 05:15 PM

if i can (and it does sound like i can) use this for a carputer project, then definetly sight me up.

also does this cover up the bose speaker? wouldnt be a big deal but would be a bonus if it didnt.

also im interested:lol:

Pioneer, Panasonic, Mitsubishi.
all 7" screens, mp3/WMA compatible. HDD music storage. rear monitor compatible. ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) system compatible, FM VICS (traffic data), voice control, touch panel, DVD video.

The Panasonic screen is 202mm×117mm×41mm (Wx Hx D) according to the Panasonic website. http://panasonic.jp/car/navi/product.../option03.html

Another Panasonic screen is 189 mm×127 mm×33 mm (Wx Hx D) according to the Panasonic website. http://panasonic.jp/car/navi/product...ihon/spec.html

That should give you guys of what size will fit. Let me know if you want me to get the specs on the Mitsubishi screens as well.

truemagellen 09-07-2006 10:00 PM

Awesome, thank you J8

I am going to increase the order as it is clear this is going to be worthwhile.

Japan8 09-07-2006 10:02 PM

The Pioneer monitor is 194 mm(W)×128 mm(H)×39 mm(D). http://pioneer.jp/carrozzeria/cybern...ils/xh009.html
This one has mp3, WMA, AAC, DiVX, DVD, HDD media storage and more. Wish they sold it in the US.

For reference:

Converted to inches:
Pana1: 7.95 w x 4.60 h x 1.61 d
Pana2: 7.44in x 5.00in x 1.29in
Pioneer: 7.64in x 5.03in x 1.54in

Popular Carpc/Video Screens:
Xenarch 700 series 7 inch: 7.75W x 4.75H x 1.38D
Lilliput 7incher: 7.87in x 5.90in x 1.57in

This does in fact mean carpc vga/videoscreens/etc. will fit there :).

Japan8 09-07-2006 10:32 PM

Oh... by the way... you may want to look into this solution for the Mazda3 and Mazda6. I am almost positive I saw a pic of a similar dash panel in the MS3 or facelift Mazda3...

Thanks I didn't notice yet.

yep...

Mazda3

Mazda6

There have other interesting interior items like 3 gage dash panel (similar to the RX-8 one) and spoiler options like the lip spoiler from the MS6...

I hate US ! Thoes NAV in Japan are like 10000000000 times ahead of us.

I really wonder how we gonna hook them up, lets say we can find some screen that would fit, isnt the process gonna be long ?

Cuz I remember that someone installed the Factory NAV system to his 8, and it required him to take out almost every thing in the car (rear seats, etc)
