New Install and Painting
 

Well over the Memorial day holiday I decided to start a new project. I wasn't real happy with the way the box turned out after the accident and theft. So I decided to take it on myself.

The idea is to have the sub on one side in a slanted box and the Amp on the other behind plexi with some blue LEDs to accent.

In the center will be a mounted piece of plexi overlayed with vinyl, RX-8 will be cut out and outlined so it is very visible during the day and then it will give off a slight blue glow at night due to the LEDs mounted underneath.

I am also working on redoing the dash mount for the headunit, as the paint started to settle and I can begin to see where the old buttons were. I am also straightening it a little as it was a little off.

Second project was to paint the engine covers. I originally had the center one painted however I wanted to try painting them all. I taped off the little slots to show some depth otherwise painted the whole tops of each one.

First pictures are of the progress on the box, second are of the engine bay.

good luck, just got done with my 1080 box, still need to finish amp box..time consuming, but so worth it. I have a similar idea for the amp box, and if u finish it before me, I'd love to see how urs turns out, because I have been contemplating what to do for a few days now. I am going on a 2 week trip on thursday, so when I get back I hope to see pictures, and I'll try get pix of mine up soon as well.

Engine bay looks great. Where did you get a perfectly matching blue paint?

Funny thing, the Metallic Blue paint sold in any Auto Zone or Discount Auto matches the paint almost perfectly. Add a good solid base coat and a few good coats of clear and its almost perfect!


By the way the box and system is almost complete......taking some pictures tonight!

Looks good. What kind of paint did you use on the engine covers?

Alright so I know I said last night, but I needed an extra day.
So here they are.

First shots are of the storage bin (still need to change the hinge hardware to silver). Its as big as it could be and its about the size of 4 quarts of oil.

Next we have the long awaited box. Let me tell you this was a learning experience. Had a little help from a local shop with the carpeting. Original idea was painted fiberglass but the best choice for long term durability is carpet.

Here's the setup:
10" in Fiberglassed box made to fit.
Amp in regular box hidden behind 1/2" Plexi, accented by LED tubes that come on with the car.
Floor Cut out is part MDF with a center cut out of 1/2" Plexi. I used a vinyl cut out and then spray painted the under side of the plexi. There is a ghosting effect by doing to layers of paint off set a little.
Under the plexi is a motorcycle LED kit. The kit offers 12 different cycles with Solid colors, Strobes, dimming, and dancing to the music. All LEDs are blue. I also built in a lip at the front part of the trunk to keep things from flying on to the plexi. The next thing I need to build is a made to fit cover for traveling etc so I still use max space in the trunk.
I also made the center piece easily removable in order to get to all of the tire irons and parts.

This set includes another picture of the front floor accent lights matching the trunk.

I also had my shop who originally did the dash piece to redo it a little as the paint settled and you could start to see where the old buttons used to be. Its all square and much better fitting now.

Dupli-Color Metalcast paint. You can get it at Auto Zone or Discount Auto. Its almost a perfect match as long as you use their base coat paint first and then put a clear coat on top.
