Navigation Lockout while Driving

I've noticed that our Navigation Systems will lockout controls at around 3~6Mph. (For obvious safety reasons.) Does anyone know whether the system uses the GPS as a speed indicator or is there an input into the system from another source?

Thanks,

Steven

I have never noticed that mine has ever locked out. My wife and I travel alot and she will pilot the nav. and play with it while I am driving.

Mine locks also. We can't enter an address while the car is in motion. Is there a way to unlock it?

My 04 works even when i am moving, I always get yelled for driv ing and entering address

Lockout? :scratchhe The navigation system in the 04 and 05 RX-8s do not lock out. If that's a "feature" of the 06+ RX-8s...then that blows. Hopefully there is a sensor or something you can disable but who knows.

+1 here. My 2004 has never shown any evidence of a lock-out. I scroll and zoom sometimes to preview a route and often have my co-pilot run the navi at speed. Works every time.

+1 on the '04's and no lockout

On a separate note, does anyone notice a clicking sound when the screen opens and closes? It sounds like a gear is loose and it's causing a click about halfway especially when opening.

Grab a manual and see if there were any wires added to the 06-07 nav. If the software hasn't changed my guess is there is a switch or sensor locking you out. If that's the case it should be any easy fix:)

Mine is a 06`.... crap. I guess "free will" isn't as free as we would like to think anymore.

It would have been nice if they tied it into the passenger seat airbag sensor, letting the Nav system know whether a passenger is present to use the system or not.

Oh well....

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Steven

super lame.

it's crappy enough that I have to hit "ok" when I start up the car, in order to use it. A lockout would be too much.

At that point, aftermarket GPS would be the way to go.

Someone will come up with a fix. Just need to know what exactly creates the lockout whether it be software or hardware. For me, hardware would make it the easiest to figure out. Anyone have the newest service manuals or are there any locals willing to meet up w/ me to and try and figure it out?

I know on the G35's there's a speed wire that runs into the nav unit and the guys hook a switch up to this so they can use it while driving.

They need to re-connect it most of the time because the GPS uses it to enhance precision when in areas with poor GPS signals. Not sure if the Mazda system does that.

yes, it's called dead reckoning, and the rx-8 navigation system uses it.
