NAV DVD Copy
 

Anybody has try to copy the Nav DVD?
I tried with a DVD R+ the copy is ok, but the Navigation System doesn’t want to read my copy. It say "can't read the disk"
Any suggestion? I'd like to have a backup copy but how to get it?

my guess would be:
1) the system isn't made to read +Rs, try -Rs
2) try a different copying program (primodvd, alcohol 120%)
3) there's copy protection built into the DVD and you can't copy it

I work in a shop that sells DVD Nav systems. As far as we have heard no one has been able to copy the Nav DVD's. Sorry. I have been into computers for a long time, and I thought it'd be easy. But it's not. We have to pay the $300 for the Nav DVD's for the Alpine and Pioneer even though we work in the shop. It sucks. Let me know if you figure out how to copy it. I'd really like to keep a backup of mine....

Most NAV DVD's are 2 layer. DVD burners can (currently) only burn 1 layer at 4.77GB. If you put your NAV disk in the computer you will see there is more than 4.77GB of data on it.

I called up the place that makes the NAV cd and they said there was no new update available yet anyway. She said sometime this summer they'd be releasing a 2004 disk. I asked about price, she said it wasn't determined yet.

Look in the CD case that came with your navi disk, it will have the ph# for you to call.

Sony has just came out with a personal dual layer dvd burner. Makes me wish I waited before I got mine, but anyway. Here's a link


i assume the media price is going to be rther expensive, so I guess it doesnt matter I do single layer for now.

And now that Sony is showing a new dual layer burner we might be able to copy them soon....

Remember, just like the current +- DVD burners, there is more than one dual layer burner coming out :( And they burn different amounts of data.

Like I said. Might. We can only hold our breath and hope.

yeah... it's more than just disk size. They may over burn, or write corrupt data that your burner/software may try to correct and thus prevent a 100% copy of the disk. Since the Navi disks aren't mainstream, I doubt you'll be seeing too many people with them for download on kazza :P

ive always wondered do the dvd navs actully play dvds too or just the navigation kit?

Likely for liability reasons, they're set to not play anything but the navi disk. To play movies, it'd need additional hardware.

Eh, depends on the model. Pioneer has an in dash model that plays both the Nav disc and DVD movies (AVIC-N1). They used to have a model that existed in the trunk that played both also (AVIC-90DVD). It's really pain to use those models though. If you want to plan a route you have to have the Nav disc in. If you want to watch a movie while using the Nav you have to take the Nav disc out, and then if you miss a turn or want to change your route, you have to put the disc back in. Not fun in my opinion. On the same note, I've never seen a factory Nav play DVD's.

And to back up Jason (since he typed his response at the same time as me) there is a company that makes it an option to play DVD's on the Nav screens of factory Nav systems (www.navtv.com). You do need additional hardware (the DVD player and more). But he's right, you're not supposed to have motion video in view of the driver while moving. Most systems (both Pioneer models I menentioned included) have a parking brake feature that makes it so you have to be in park with the parking brake set to watch a movie. Of course the Nav would work all the time though.

Shoot. Didn't realize that no one has really been able to successfully get a burnt copy of the Nav working. I guess I can delete the 4.7 gigs of ISO I just got from a friend off my computer and just buy the newest disk.

This burnt copy is a 2002 because our RX-8 was missing the disk.

Does the disk have to always be in the car, or does it store in memory?
