Okay everyone...

So I have 2 12" Alpine Type R subwoofers that I love with all my heart in a Zenclosures custom box.

Recently, one of my subs FELL OUT of the box. This is the 2nd time this has happened. (both have fallen out once) When I went to reinstall, I noticed one of my subs has blown a voice coil too. :crying:

SOOO... This is my question: Since one subwoofer is blown, and the box is very limited on drilling space now... Should I just sell my good Type R and buy a new Type X? I have a guy willing to sell me a brand new one for $200. Also, I have a 1200 watt RMS amplifier.

Pros:
Single Subwoofer=More trunk space
Good Deal
Easier to mess with

Cons:
Have to build/buy a new box
Trying to sell a subwoofer
Figuring out what to do with the half blown subwoofer

So what do you think guys?

if u got the money, buy the new one, i got a single 12 powered by a 1200 watt amp n i love it. it doesn't free up too much more trunk space but it still pounds. altho i think if u can buy the new type x n fit it into the current box, that would b cherry

he's not gonna be able to put a new type X into the same box, unless he wants two different speakers in the same box?

Either way you're not gonna free up much space. to hold the X you'll need a box, that pretty much means another zenclosure, or a generic box. the generic boxes i've seen for a single 12, although obviously smaller, their dimensions dont really save you much space over the Z box. by far the best thing i've seen are the boxes made by http://www.4080enclosures.com/

you'll have to use 10's, but thats one of my summer projects is getting rid of the Kappa Perfect 12dVQ/zenclosure and switching to the 4080 enclosures with 10s

oh also, wtf man, speakers falling out of their box?? what are you mounting them with, tenpenny nails? I've had the Infiniti 12 in that box for a couple years, its not the heaviest but not light either.... it's(the car/rear end) been thrown around all over the place and the box is bolted to the cross frame members behind the seats so theres no give either...

If I were you I would sell the R and buy the X. Keep the same box and blown sub as a dummy speaker as it will produce sound from the X. Them mount the X backwards so it doesn't look as bad having 2 different subs in one box.

I went ahead and bought the Type X last night and it's looking pretty good...

I don't really plan on keeping my current sub box as the edges where you drill in are just falling apart. Also, it almost looks like the type x is too deep. I have a bad feeling it will bottom out in a zenclosures.

Can anyone prove me wrong?

If I was to get another zenclosures... Would they be able to port it for me?

Oh and my subs falling out... Idkk man they really shouldn't have. I mean they weren't really wood screws but they were solid none the less

yes, you can talk to the guy and he can ut it to suit you. i believe ebay also has box dimensions

Now that you've already purchased the Type-X, we'll concentrate on that.

It's not going to fit in the Zen box. (8.5" on the box. Type-X is 8.6") You can shoot this guy an email and see why his boxes are a full .5" deeper then Zen's. Make sure he's measuring correctly.

You can also see it's he's willing to do a little notchout in the back wall directly behind the sub. I've seen it before. Could give you an extra .25 for extra cooling behind the sub.

It's also important to figure out why the Type-R blew. What headunit are you running? Where do you have the gain knob set? Crossovers set properly?

Hey Firebirdude... I actually did get my original box from that guy as you recommended him to me because i wanted that amp rack. Is there anyway I can buy from him without the amp rack?

Also, gain was set to the exact halfway mark.

I'm running an Alpine CDA 9886, however, I'm using my LOC because the sound has more clarity and volume to the subs that way.

&& I don't even know what crossovers are so whatever they would normally be set at is what they would be at hahah

Can anyone give me any assistance or suggestions when tuning?

I made a custom box for my Type X.
I have a Hifonics Brutus BXI 1606D.
I have an Alpine CDA 9886 Head Unit.
and I'm using my 5 volt loc.

soo any steps I should take when tuning? I really really really don't want to blow this sub too....

Why are you using a LOC when you have an aftermarket headunit with RCAs? Run a pair of RCAs and real remote turn-on lead you lazy butt!


The gain knob on the BXI1606D ranges from 9V to 0.2V, so I wouldn't take it past half way. Phase knob at 0 degrees. Bass EQ knob at 0 to start with. Subsonic filter at about half (25Hz). Low pass filter at about half (125Hz).

Keep in mind you're going from two subs to one. And the difference in quality in not huge. It's not going to be as loud. Plain and simple. Probably cleaner though. And with that amp, you may have been wired to 1 ohm with the Type-R. Giving each sub 800WRMS. Not a huge deal unless you had all the knobs cranked and were sending some dirty signals to em.

Hahah i know it sounds bad....

But believe me I DID run a pair RCAs and the remote turn on to my amp. As a matter of fact their still there in the trunk. HOWEVER, the loc wires are WAYYYY cleaner and louder despite the headunit having 4 volt pre-outs(I even sent another headunit back because I was pissed about that one being quieter)

Also, about the Hifonics amps... Do they actually put out their rms ratings? I had heard they only put out like 75% of what the say (1200 rms) so I wasn't so worried about it.

They are suppose to come with a birth sheet. But that's not really the end-all answer to how much power it "really" outputs.

They do pretty well though. Good watt to dollar ratio. Decently trustworthy too.

I have another post-installation issue:

My sub will be quiet then randomly boost extremely loud, then quiet, then stay loud until I turn it off... While trying to troubleshoot... I noticed one of the speaker wires was a little loose and every time I pushed it in, it got louder.

Since then, I have tightened the wire and everything but it STILL DOES IT.

Any ideas... anyone?

Check for loose wires. Play the stereo while jiggling each connection in the trunk.
