My Sunglass holder satnav mod

looks pretty cool. flips up and down no issues and the power is also routed to the satnav.

Cool. How about a picture with flash so we can see the open holder?

How well does the built in antenna catch the satellites? Normally, when mounted on the dash or glass, it sees them through the windshield. Here you have it quite close to the roof.

^^ yes, that's a question I wanted to ask too.

Also, it is cool to utilize the sunglass holder (which is useless for me, seeing that I wear glasses all the time, LOL). But it is hardly the optimal location for a GPS, since you have to take your eyes off the road just to see the map.

Sorry guys I will post some better photos later when I'm back from work. With regards to the satnav the performance is the same as before. If I had any issues I have an external antenna I could use but up till now it's not been needed.

Neat idea.

It's a neat idea but not practical for me. Did the GPS not come with the windshield mount? I would think the whole point of safety is to not have to look up at your ceiling to find out where you are going. Well unless your just listening to the thing. I'm more of a visual person.

Chris 11-16-2012 12:53 PM

that takes the satnav out of visibility while driving, not ideal

man how short are you guys? I have my mirror flipped upside down and pushed as far up to the roof as I can get it. I also check all my mirrors regularly. and having it down towards the bottom of the windshield where the factory gps is takes my eyes off the road more than looking into my mirror which is essentially what this does. I like the position, and idea, but that is where I put my glasses, and hardly ever need my gps to go where i'm going. Also I prefer to get the gps that tells me where to go that way I don't have to look at it anyway. I've also found in the texas heat leaving gps (garmin specifically) in the car can make them....unhappy.

More pics!

And I just use voice commands on my phone. Hold the side button, tell it where I want to go (even just a restaurant name or something), give it 10 seconds and it speaks back to me on where I should go. Includes real-time traffic too. All free. Works way better than my old $800 Pioneer D3 did. lol

Actually, this location wouldn't work for me.. I'm 6' 6" and have my mirror pushed all the way up as far as it goes. If I open the sunglass holder, it blocks the view of the mirror.

Outstanding! Love this.

Which unit did you mount? How did you secure it in the holder? Did you direct wire it into the lighting in the overhead panel? Any info is appreciated.
