my sub idea

ok so i've decided i want to get a subwoffer for my 8. and this is what i've come up with

JL Audio
12w7
(contacting JL Audio about amp situation)
box design

thoughts? is it able to become a reality? feasible?

Butch Brown 03-22-2006 06:37 AM

8w7 will do the job with a jl 250/1 amp. The Box will fit better. http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_e...=1&prod_id=293

gonnahanvan8 03-22-2006 08:15 AM

I don't think either of those boxes will fit. Isn't the throat opening of the Rx only like 11.5 inches?

robbz23 03-22-2006 08:53 AM

I think if you take the plastic off the rear part of the trunk you get about 12 to 13 inches. You will never get that box in the trunk unless you take out the rear seats and the X bracing. Even then i think it will be too tall. I have a 10w6v2 in a 4080 box with a 500/1 that totally kicks. If that isn't good enough for you go with 2 4080boxes on either side. This way with the amp mounted in the recess you will still have most of your trunk space.

if you take off the plastic cover and the trunk mechanism then you have a good amount of room, just have to play with the box to get it in. i have a 10W7 in a 1.5cu. ft. ported enclosure in there now and i managed to get it in. But that box you are trying to fit in there is a little too big. i would highly recommend a custom box if you want it to fit in the small trunk.

fenderlover 03-22-2006 09:22 PM

ok can someone take a pic fo the plastic covering your talking about and tigerfootball got any links to pics?

fenderlover 03-22-2006 09:26 PM

and what are 4080boxes?

fenderlover 03-22-2006 09:33 PM

and would it be worth the decrees in sub size for jl audios ported box design. or get a bigger sub but a custom box?

strayer2189 03-22-2006 09:46 PM

thats what i wanted too but i went to 3 different shops all said that with proper box size the best i could hope for is a 10w7 with a custom box...I ordered it last weekend and it should hopefully be in tomorrow and installed friday ill post pictures when finished

gonnahanvan8 03-23-2006 06:43 AM

dang strayer, I would've sold ya my JL 10W7 cheap. I'm getting an 8W7 instead , I think.

zrmotoring 03-23-2006 12:02 PM

custom make the box

i have a 13w 7

what a pain to but the box inside the trunk, had to put box in first then the subwoofer

staticlag 03-23-2006 12:25 PM

that box is 17 inches high, it would be physically impossible to fit it in the rx8.

It is possible to have the 12w7 if you want it, a few guys on here have done it, but your not going to have any trunk space left. And I mean, none.

zrmotoring 03-23-2006 12:58 PM

it is not impossible to fit a 13 w7 its not sitting all the way back and yes there is no space.http://audiophonics-asd.com/images1/bob2.jpg

I have a base model rx8 i am wanting to upgrade the system. Can someone tell me if it is possible to add two door speakers and a 10" sub with amp.. without charging the head unit? Any ideas would help...
Thanks

fenderlover 03-24-2006 09:11 PM

i don't believe changing the head unit is the problem. the alternator is :)

fenderlover 03-25-2006 07:51 PM

i just really liked what jl audio did for the porting on the box i posted. i'm wondering though if all that would fit would be like the 8w7 if i'd be better to get like a 10w7 or 12w7 with a normal box and port it custom

Although I didn't have a base model (I had the BOSE) I wanted the same; some tight bass and more clarity withough wholesale changes to my dash. Here's what I had installed:

Front speakers: JL ZR 6.5 Components --> http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...php?page_id=31

Rear Deck Speakers: JL VR 6x9 coaxials -->http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...hp?comp_id=129

Sub: JL 10 W3v2 -->http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_s...p?series_id=11

Amp: JL 500/5 --> http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_amps.php?amp_id=256

OEM Interface: JL Cleansweep --> http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...=1&prod_id=369

Rationale behind choices: I was interested in 'clean', accurate, full range audio. I wanted to keep my OEM headunit & wasn't willing to sacrifice all my trunk space. Lastly, I set a budget of $2,000. I was able to accomplish all of that with these selections, installation with lifetime warranty included.
Knowing The fron components were critical to my desire, I went with JL's flagship ZR series. These provide tremoundous range & clarity and I am extremely pleased with the results. The rear 'filler' speakers were less important and, given the 6x9 size, it was a no-brainer to leverage the JL coax's. Given my previous comment about not giving up all my trunk for a sub-box, the JL 10W3v2 was an optimal choice; it rocks with a small enclosure. I elected to have a box with a downward facing position; this allows the bass to travel a bit prior to entering the cabin but also eliminates the rear facing challenges; visibility and potential damage. The Cleansweep was mandatory due to the factory headunit and it's unbelievable how easy this device makes integration. Lastly, the 500/5 was perfect for this install - plenty of power for the up-front speakers and runs the sub at it's 'optimal' 250w. It also fits perfectly into the aclove in the trunk with a false floor installed above it.

As the saying goes "different strokes for different folks". You need to figure out what's important to you and prioritize. This setup worked for me but I'm sure would be unacceptable for others.

Good luck with your final decision, any way you go will be a significant improvement over where you are today -
