Mounting satellite radio
 

I've looked at just about all the threads for stand alone satellite radios on here and they're all a little outdated.
I was wondering if anyone has any more current models and have mounted them with something other than the XM/Sirius mounts.

I had a brilliant idea to make a mount that would take the place of the ashtray assembly, I ended up scraping that idea because it was over my head.
I couldn't get the metal to bend the same way as the ashtray assembly door, so it left gaps and would've looked super cheap. :banghead:

I know lots of people have mounted their sat radios in the ashtray assembly itself. I have an XM Onyx radio and it's too big.

Anybody have the same radio and/or have pictures of how they mounted their radios post circa 2006?

Judging by the responses, I'm guessing that most everyone has the integrated receiver installed.

Surely someone must have a stand alone sat radio installed in their 8...

I just think satellite radio has lost that new and cool feeling. Not nearly as many people buy them today as did 4 years ago. It's getting outdated by things like Pandora and Slacker. Then take into account the increasing amount of vehicles coming with satellite radio built-in, so the out-board satellite receivers really get no love.

This particular message board doesn't have a super active stereo section. And I think most of us in here have all moved onto aftermarket headunits of some nature. There's really not much I can help you with here. If you're not happy with the suction cup mount that came with the unit, you might check out a universal mount that runs along side the center dash. Something like these.

There's a ton of different universal manufacturers. Velcro or double sided tape will make for an invisible connection. If you're not happy with those, break out the fiberglass and make something.

I pulled the ashtray out from under the heater controls, put the sticky mount that comes with a car kit facing downward inside of it, and then used a cassette adapter. I have four Sirius mounting kits and use it constantly as I spend a ton of time in my van delivering newspapers.

Mr Pieper - I used the sticky mount before but living in Alabama the heat made it useless. Every time I got back in my car I'd have to push it back down since the adhesive was melting off.

I suppose I'll have to get creative. I've not worked with fiberglass before maybe I should give it a shot.

What's wrong with the suction cup on the windshield? Keep it up high and maybe by the rearview mirror. Thieves shouldn't be able to easily spot it there. Or if you're generally happy with the plastic disk ordeal, hot glue that mutha in place. Or use industrial velcro. That stuff is nearly like cement when properly installed.

Mine is actually wedged into the ashtray. The adhesive is really only secondary. Pictures:

It was already there. I had to actually hunt around for an adapter.

You know they make a simple FM modulator? It just plugs into your headunit's antenna wire. No power to connect or anything. Maybe 15 minutes to install. I'm sure it would yield better sound quality than a cassette. If nothing else, it would certainly make the install a lot cleaner.

You could hardwire the power while you're in there. Free up your cig lighter and clean up the install even more.

I know. I have them in my other 2 cars. Is it easy to get at it without ripping too much apart? It's a 2004 and some other things I read on here made me paranoid to pull anything apart for fear of breaking something fragile that I'm not already replacing.

You could try one of the seat mount brackets. It has a goose neck that attaches to one of the bolts on the seat mount, then you can bend it in place to where you want it.

Sweet! I was looking for what you were talking about Georgia8er and ended up pouring through websites about ham radio mounts before I got to this site which has exactly what I need.

I did read that on bumpy roads it tends to shake around a bit but I don't think any of us will be going off road any time soon. :suspect:

Also, depending on where you live the package shelf under the back glass is pretty good for the antenna. It will go out a bit more than if it is on the outside of the car, but it is a lot less conspicuous. I just run the antenna wire under the trim that goes down the middle.

I have been looking and this holder works great. I have the one for a nexus 7 tablet. It fits in the cup holder . they make it for phones and garmen units so should work for satellite radio also
