MDF Sub box

1 Attachment(s)
I have had 2 10" Alpine Type Rs that i had originally purchased for my FD years back. long story short it got totaled before i had a chance build my box. so they have sat unused for about 5 years. I just got a killer deal on an amp locally and am ready to put them to use. Since im not into super intense deafeningly loud bass, the 500w RMS should be ample.

the other day i got my measurements, and designed a box on SketchUp. it will be my first plain MDF box (ive done a number of FG enclosures before), so im excited to do it. I went to start and draw my patterns on my MDF sheet i had from a previously planned project. But of course I had a hiccup, it was 1/2" when i had thought it was 3/4". so i picked up a 4x4 sheet tonight (more than enough). i have most of the shapes drawn out (a few select pieces are not drawn).

Im only using one sub and it will be located in the rear pass through, there are a few out there that are similar, though i hadn't seen them until after i had made my plans. it was more of a rough copy of the GTR. I will replace the cover with a hole in it, and likely fabric over the hole.

it does/will require trimming the plastic on the vertical sides to be flush with the seats.

ive tweaked it from this design, but its similar...

It isn't done yet. I got all the pieces cut and realized an issue. So I'm using some sheet aluminum, which I have to find sone one that can weld it. When its finished I get some pics up.

i have decided to scrap that design. even though i already have the main portion that sticks off the box made. but i came up with a new idea to make better use of my space. updates to follow.

Finally got around to making the hole in the pass-thru cover for my sub to fire through. Contrary to most of my projects, I couldn't be happier. I still have some things to do to finish it. I'm going to put a speaker mesh in over the hole, with speaker fabric over the mesh. My goal is to have something that could be mistaken for stock.

Since you stated you scrubbed the first design; what size sub are you going with?

superdan50 08-04-2014 10:10 AM

Same 10". But instead of the sub being inside the cabin, nearly against the pass-thru cover, it will be in the trunk. I think that I will still trim the plastic that is behind the seats (it makes the actual opening smaller than the gap between the back seats. Then I'm going to make a tube that ducts the sub to the hole in the pass-thru cover, it will have a slight taper. I'm primarily completely redesigning the box to make better use of my trunk space than the original design. It will create a hidden compartment where I can store my oil and rags (and various other necessities). At this point I have everything except the carpet to cover the back, so if anyone knows where I can find matching carpet, it would be helpful!

superdan50 08-04-2014 10:13 AM

Side note: The reason I'm ducting it is because the sub won't be visible once the grill screen is on, so it won't be visible anyway. For some one wanting to do the same but have it open so the sub is visible, an 8" sub would be perfect to sit in there.

so i finished the box, just need to wrap the back in carpet to make it invisible to the untrained eye. the 1x4 will be replaced with a proper shim the length of the box (to the left of the hinges). using this method the box is pressed firm against the support, as of now it is wedged in so firmly, i dont think any other method of securing the box is necessary. the carpet will cover the shim.

with the "secret" compartment door open.

Attachment 221023

no ducting yet, i will decide if its worth it after listening to it.
this picture is a bit misleading, the sub is way bigger than it looks here, and it is all centered.

right now im trouble shooting volume issues. i can hear it but its not loud, i think its the settings on the amp. ill figure it out in the morning.

archwisp 08-07-2014 09:03 AM

That looks nice! I like the hidden compartment idea, too. For the volume issue, try reversing the phase.

superdan50 08-07-2014 11:28 AM

i tried that, still nothing (rather the same volume). i can wire most things, its just the setting later on that screw me.

heres a pic i took test fitting the main portion of the box, before i finished the back and put it on.

GEE! why didn't I think of that? i actually piloted all of my holes (all the way to the size of the shank of the screw). it was simply a very short span, with 2 screws. notice its not split anywhere else?

I had seen this after i designed my initial box, and they were very similar (or so it seems). but i didnt want to remove all of my plastics and what not. additionally the sub i wanted to/did use was simply too large.
