looking for shift knob recommendations

I am looking for a good shift knob to replace the stock one. I don't think the stock one is all that comfortable compared to things I have had in the past. I tried searching but all i find are references to the lighted version of the stock sift knob.

Does anyone know where i can get a plain round shift knob for this car. All I can seem to find are funky shaped things that look rice to me.

thanks!

greese, do a search for voodoo shift knob, you will see some simple and comfortable shift knobs.

they are direct screw-on and much lighter than the rotary shaped one.

I use one, and I only have good things to say about it, the reasonable price is just icing on the cake. Highly recommended!

Why would a light shift knob be desirable? You're just going to get more vibration.

That Voodoo shift knob looks about right. Although a metal knob might cook my hand in Florida. I had a similar shape on my MG but it was wood.

thanks for the responses.

I thought heavier shift knobs gave better shifting control and lots more benefits compared to light shiftknobs? If you're trying to save weight on the car, shift knob is not on the list.

At mazdapspeed japan they have a lighted knob that lights up the pattern.

i'm just looking for comfort. Someting in the shape of the voodoo knobs covered in black leather with the shift pattern embossed on it would be ideal.

maybe a voodoo shifter and a short shift kit would be the way to go.

Search the forum for "knobmeister" - he sells custom painted and engraved Voodoo knobs, and also wood knobs if the heat is an issue for you. Also, I think he makes custom-embroidered "booties" to keep the sun off of your knob, which I hear can be quite painful... :p

Anyone try the S2000 shift knob on the 8?

If I remember correctly, the S2K's gearknob is quite heavier than the Rx8 one so it should improve shifting effort and quality.

Yes, I tilted the stock shifter slightly clockwise so the rotor shape fits my hand perfectly. I find it much more comfortable than a standard round one.

I also recommend the Voodoo. The feel is great and as soon as I put it on, I immediately felt more connected to the car. The shifts are much more precise now. The fact that it's lighter has not had any detrimental effect. The pearl look knobs match the "titanium" part of the interior nicely.

It does get warm in the summer, but cools down quickly. It's never really been an issue for me. I do keep a driving glove handy in case it's too hot, but honestly, I've never had to use it.

It won't fit. Honda uses a different thread pitch than Mazda.

I took the Voodoo knob off my Miata and tried it in my RX8 and love it.

I also put a block on the clutch pedal to bring it up and overall shifting is very much improved. :)

nt5k 11-07-2004 06:28 PM

I've never had a knob that had threads. Most had just a 'blank' plastic thing and the shifter itself would create the thread on it..
