Lighting up the shift knob?

Anybody thought of doing this? Is it even possible? I'd like to get a small blue LED underneath the shifter just to add a little something cool... maybe hook it up to the running lights or just leave it on regularly. Any help?

There used to be a lighted knob available. If I remember correctly, people had problems with it.

I don't look at my shifter when i'm driving, no need for lights.

you could do it if you really wanted to. you could basically come out with a replication of the lighted shiftknob that i think is JDM(?)

but honestly if your asking if it can be done and for ideas, its prolly REALLY not worth it as it wont be as simple as buying an led and a piece of wire and plugging it into something then glueing the cap back on the shifter

just buy the one thats sold already, it's something ridiculus like 200-250 bucks, but it'll be cheaper than all the time and effort your gonna put into converting your OEM one

yeah, the original illuminated shift knob had issues with the weak soldering job. Many users complained that the lighting did not last long.
Would be a great mod were it not soooo expensive.

lopezian2004 07-06-2008 11:16 PM

Haha so not as simple as just running a wire from the knob to your running lights wire? (assuming you want it that way)

I am definitely not good with how wiring works at all

They changed the wiring on the JDM illuminated knob and mine has been in for over two years with no issues. Also....Pollack did do a DIY where he showed how to change out the red LED to a blue, but I just never got around to doing it yet.

The site appears to be somewhat broken at the moment, but this link might get you close, but you'll have to wait for the site to get fixed.

Interesting...

Wow... nice job... How do you remove the center shift pattern? I know I tried it and couldn't, end up scratched the silver trim piece instead:banghead:

VarneyMazda 07-08-2008 05:07 AM

Did you try heating it up?

Mazurfer 07-08-2008 08:41 AM

Do some searches if you get no answer. Pollack had a thread where he showed how to do it with pictures( I think). He was doing this to change the LED to blue, I think it involved heating it up slowly with a heat gun to soften the glue, then prying it up carefully witha very small intrument. Then it was just using super glue to hold it back down when done. Something about only glueing the edges so you didn;t mess up whatever pattern your shift knob has on it. Mine just has the normal 1-6 shift pattern that lights up. I'll see if I can find the thread.

Mazurfer 07-08-2008 08:50 AM

Actually, now that I found Pollacks DIY thread again. It appears as if he may have cooled it down to loosen the glue.
This thread is about how to basically install it, but eventually you can see it turns into how to get that top off and change the LED out.

The only thing I can't figure out at this point is how you manage to squeeze the wire to the side... between the knob body and leather without removing the leather.

laythor 07-21-2008 02:44 AM

i'm using a vodoo piano black knob (no shift pattern)... i know where 1-6 and R are located without looking.

Tamas 07-21-2008 04:37 AM

It's all about the looks, not that anyone would need the lighted knob to show where to shift.
