I have the same problem, but I buy something for the car and something for her. It's more expensive, but it works a treat.

how did the fingerprint scanner go? i am a low voltage alarm installer so i have access all kinds of finger print readers, the one you posted looks a lot more compact than what i was thinking of putting in. did you scrap the idea?
|
The project is still going to happen. I've got all I need to do the install, just finalising the wiring plan as I have to integrate it with my start button and Clifford alarm and then find a free day to put it in the car. Should be in the car in a week or so. I'll post up the results when I'm done.

Cant wait for you to finish this. I'm living vicariously through you, seeing as I cant do it myself...yet
|
I'm glad you're enjoying this as much as I am. I now have the scanner and am just planning the wiring so I can integrate it with my current alarm and start button. It actually has more features than I had thought and would act as a standalone keyless ignition. The scanner is also a multi function start button and is capable of starting the car whilst reading the fingerprint. It could also work in conjunction with the key but not allow the car to start without a valid fingerprint. I will keep my start button and have the scanner as an extra security measure whilst also allowing me two methods of starting the car, both of which will not require the key. I'll effectively have a backup start facility with a fingerprint or keypad authorisation.
Back to the wiring plan, I'll keep you posted and put up a vid when I'm done. |
Where did you get the scanner from?
|
I got mine from Amazon UK, but you can also get it from Amazon.com Fingerprint start

I've got a big decision to make as to where to mount my fingerprint scanner. I could mount it in the spare switch next to the DSC button, but it's a bit difficult to get your finger on it and it's hard to find at night. Alternatively, I can mount it on the center console next to the start button. Much easier to get to, but not sure it looks right.
What do you guys think? |
how deep is it? i think it would look pretty nice mounted on the ebrake handle
|
I agree, it would, but it's actually about 5cm deep and wouldn't fit.
|
Dam i think my hand would hit the start button and shut my car off mid drive.. lol.. just my luck
|
what about on the door?
On the side of the window button cluster? It's pretty comfortable to have your left hand on the pull with the thumb extending touching the edge of that plastic. |
Accidentally hitting the start button and shutting off the car is not likely, as you have the have the clutch pressed and the button held down for 2 seconds to shut off the engine once it is running.
Mounting the scanner on the door card is a great idea and would look good. It would involve running the wires through the cable run by the door hinge which would be difficult, but would be possible. I'll have to see if there is enough room behind the switch panel to mount the scanner. I've also considered mounting the scanner in the roof console too, but I haven't decided the best place yet. Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming. |
I like the roofmount idea. I can't imagine the wire run would be too fun. How about replacing the turn key device in the steering column. You already have it covered. Could you remove the device where the key used to go and mount the scanner in the cover?

Mounting in the roof would be difficult as the wire is not long enough to reach to under the steering column and would need an extension lead making up.
The existing ignition barrel would be good and can be removed, but the scanner could also be mounted close to it. |
picture 2 looks like a great spot. I think mounting it on the door card is the best spot so far.
|
I like the second picture too. how many conductors are in the wire running to the scanner and what type of connection is it, rj45? (ethernet) or rj11? like like a phone? or is it usb? im seriously considering ordering one.

There is a 7 pin molex connector on the base of the scanner and a serial connector on the other end and also an earth. I would need to extend the cable if mounting it in the door card and the best place with enough room to mount it does not give a comfortable position. I'm still looking for the ideal spot, but so far it's a choice between the centre console and next to the ignition switch.
|
Center console would good for show and next to the other devices for consistency. But it would probably be more comfortable next to turn key on dash board. Which are you going for?
Also... is there a part number you wouldn't mind sharing? |
I'm probably going to go with the console option and fix a plate around the keypad button and scanner to tie everything together.
The scanner can be found Here |
