Installing shift boot to AT console?

As what the title says. Is it possible to install one? If so, how is it done?

Yes, pretty much like the MT. Could I use any type of shift boot or do I need something for AT? I wanna get something where I don't have the hassle of going back and forward. How is it done actually. I tried to figure it out yesterday but I didn't want to actually work on it until I know for certain how its done.

you're just talking about replacing the shift cover plate on your auto with the leather shift boot from the manual right? you can't change the shift 'pattern' of your auto with just a cover change you know....

ZoomZoomH Aug 7, 2006 11:37 AM

and you just need to buy a MT leather shift boot from the mazda dealer, direct swap with the automatic shifter cover plate.

Yeah, I'm pretty much changing the shifter cover plate. Sorry for the dumb questions but... does it have to be from mazda? Can I get the shift boot from like MOMO? Or some other aftermarket accessory? Also, is installing the shift boot to the automatic shift console simple like on an MT?

Polak sells custom Real Leather boots that will fit... Check his website...

You'll have to remove the AT shift pattern plate and the leather boot fits well..
I think there's a DIY here too. Search :)

Is the purpose of this mod to make your auto look like a manual?

Well, to the point yes... It does seem like I'm a doing this to be a MT wannabe or something but I have my reason of doing this type of mod.

many people have done them, shouldnt be hard

SiLVeRE8 Aug 7, 2006 11:22 PM

if you want to do it the ghetto way... just grab a long thin sheet metal that looks like ruler and make it into a circle by taping each end together, but the diameter of the circle should be a little smaller than the shift pattern hole (lets say 2mm on all sides so you can fit the shift boot into the hole). next just wrap the shiftboot over the circle and stick it in. and there, you have your manual look. haha (thats what i did when i had my auto 8). :cwm27:

and heres a pic of it from 2 years ago:

ooo, parked in 1st gear i see. lol. nice.

PerformRX-8 Aug 11, 2006 04:42 PM

there is no way this is possible... how the hell did you do that? the automatics have LED lights under the shift plate... the Manuals don't.... i still dont know how you did that, but props to you...

ZoomZoomH Aug 11, 2006 04:45 PM

he probably just covered it over the LED's...

the OEM auto shifter plate panel and the manual shift boot are direct swaps IIRC, no modification needed
