I keep blowing up amp fuses
 

I have a old ass (well not that old like 2003 old) 800w Kenwood amp powering 2 12"s in my trunk. The amp takes 2 30w fuses but I keep blowing them :squint: So I got some 40w and they tend to last longer than the 30w ones :eyetwitch
Should I use 2 50w fuses? think they would last longer?

I think you should find out why your blowing fuses before you risk causing damage to the rest of the car.

fuses are usually rated by amps not watts.

Never use fuses larger then the amp is rated for. EVER. Figure out why you are blowing them. you have a short, or maybe your speakers are the wrong impedance? do you have bass boost way up?

Lots of things can be done to fix this, but putting in bigger fuses is not one of them. Putting in larger fuses is just a very good way of starting a fire.

time to start taking readings on all your wires and check your connections. Tedious work but worth it in the long run.

no, seriously. Find out what's causing the blown fuses.

Time to get a new amp.

If a 20amp circuit breaker tripped in your house, would you just replace it with a 200 amp breaker? NEVER increase the fuse rating when you're blowing them. You're completely defeating the entire reason they are there.

Disconnect EVERYTHING from the amp. Replace the fuses with the correct size. Turn the gain on min. Connect the ground wire. Connect the battery wire. Use a small piece of wire to jumper the battery terminal to the remote turn on. Does the amp power up without blowing the fuses? If not, your amp is toast. If they do, reconnect the remote turn on from the headunit. Try again. If that continues to work properly, hook one item up to it at a time until you have a problem. If you get the RCAs and speakers connected and playing without blowing fuses, THEN you can slowly turn up the gain to the proper setting.

If you don't know what size the amp should take, (most are printed right on the amp) review the owners manual, look it up online, or find a picture of it on the web and look at the fuses. Don't just stick something in there.

Actually I had the same problem with my alpine PDX 1.1000 amp and an alpine type X 12 - turns out I didn't have any subsonic filtering turned on and messed up the Sub- and the subs messed impedance kept blowing all my fuses - when i finially burned up that sub enough and had to replace it with 2 alpine type R 10"s on the same amp with the same fuses.. hasn't happened again in almost 2 years no matter how hard I am on my 10"s -

Long story short. I bet it's your subs and not your amp

I'm taking it in to get fixed this Thursday guys. I'll let you know whats cracking!

good point. I used to be able to trip my old amp into protect mode by playing certain songs with my sub low pass crossover set too high. Never blew a fuse though....

I took this as he heeded my advice and had nothing connected to the outputs.... and the amp is still blowing fuses. No?
