How many Ohms?
 

Okay just a newbie here, Gathering components for upgrading the Bose system. Here is what I want to do. The more I think about upgrading the more I seem to want more which wasn't really what I set out to do but hey might as well get it right Can you guys tell me if this is too much of a load on the factory alternator.
Got a Kicker ZX 400.1 so far and I want to try to run it to 2 10 inch subs @4 ohms (thinking about the 4080's sub enclosers). Here is where I need some clarification or help If I run these in parallel 400 watt RMS X 1 @ 2 ohms amp then would it in fact still be rated at 400 or 800 watts RMS X 1 @ 2 ohms - is this right?
That all being said can the stock alternator handle this load and if it can can it handle a second smaller amp when I go to upgrade my 6 by 9's and drive them?

No. If you read the info on your amp its quite easy to get an answer...

Power output: 200 watts RMS at 4 ohms or 400 watts of peak power at 2 ohms. Peak power means it wont run at that all the time...that is its max with ideal conditions in every way possible.
Yes your car alternator will run this easily but its always good to add a cap.

Lots of these manufacturers trick people by posting and labeling max output in the name or 2 ohm stats. Its their way of tricking people like you to think your getting a great deal on a high output amplifier.

Thanks - yes that would be a sweet amp! Given that I already have the ZX400.1 and I would like to power 2 10 inch subs. How would you recommend I proceed?
Could I use the ZX400.1 for the 6 by 9's or no because it is mono?
Sorry for all the newbie questions but I gotta start somewhere and really want to learn / do this myself for the whole experience thing -blah blah blah

P.S. You got me thinkin' about that ZX1000.1 amp now but I am already gonna go over budget with the 4080 enclosures

You can power the 6x9's in mono but you wont have a left and a right.

your best bet is to sell that amp on ebay - hopefully it's still "new in box" and you can make most of your money back..

and then you should learn from your mistake - and do A LOT of research about exactly what you want before you start buying stuff...

The ZX400.1 does 200WRMSx1@4ohms or 400WRMSx1@2ohms. Both ratings are nominal and at 14.4V. Ah hell, I'll even link you to the manual:

Before we can determine anything, we need to know exactly which subwoofers you are using. A model number would be great. Single 4 ohm? Dual 2 ohm? Dual 4 ohm? We need to know these kind of things.... Sounds to me like you have a decent grasp on things.... just a little confused.

I realize now that ZX400.1 would be lacking in power to drive these but what if I ran the coils in series and then the 2 subs in parallel at rating of 2 ohm total?

Am I dreaming or should I get a second ZX400.1 or scrap it for something more like a ZX1000.1?

Dumb question...can the body of the car even take 1200W? And who the hell would want that in their car anyways?

I will soon be using a similar setup to mr me. Two CompVR 10"s with roughly 420WRMS to the pair. In a smaller sealed box, obviously a little under powered but whatever. :uhh: And obviously the 1000.1 would be a better match. But it's more expensive and, added to a second amp to power your remaining speakers, will put a serious draw on your electrical system. You've already purchased the amp, correct? Give it a whirl. If you feel you need a little more, then worry about selling your 400.1 and getting the 750.1 or 1000.1

Oh and Mr me. Yes. You have selected the correct speakers for a final load of 2 ohms. Your series-parallel configuration looks great.
