How do I remove ash tray cover? Want to paint piano black

I want to paint my ash tray cover piano black, can someone give me a tip on removing the cover without breaking it? I am going to sand it, paint it, and put a clear coat on for shine..anything special I need to do to make the "piano black" finish? Thanks

take off ur shift knob, the pop out the panel surrounding the shifter, theres a clip in front of the cup holder area that you dont want to break. Then theres like 2 screws holding the ashtray surround in place, then just pop it out

Check the DIY for short shifter and console work.

Most of the time they brake.

After taking the shift knob off, grab a hold of the leather shift boot with TWO hands and PULL STRAIGHT UP!! Pull HARD, Pull STRAIGHT. The shift boot and console will pop right off and no clips will break, including the troubled right hand clip near the cup holder.

The screws to remove the ashtray are then visible.

NO. bad idea. You have to remove the shifter, then there is a small plastic piece at the front of the cup holders you just pry out gently, then take the same screwdriver you pried the plastic piece out with, stick it up and pop the piece of the console containing the leather shift boot out.

However, when you remove the ashtray, you're going to need to bondo it or something, because if you just paint the plastic, you'll get a textured look... which will turn out bad.

If it makes you feel better, then yes, remove the little slide out piece by the cup holder and hand brake although I'm not so sure that is necessary. I have to confess to removing it first when I removed my shift boot.

And I did say to remove the shift knob first.

There is NO need to start prying the right hand troubled corner clip first. NO NEED. Just two hands, pull on the leather shift boot. All the clips on the shift console will come loose at once. Nothing will break. Honest.

I didn't mean to capitalize NO. haha so sorry if it sounded like I was being rude. But either way works.

Thanks for your help guys!

Managed to get that console up without breaking the clip. I sanded it with 400, 1000, 2000 then painted gloss black. Just put the clear coat on today, so will see how it looks after I buff it up!
