help - stereo display and stereo won't work
 

So I had put in my aux-in adapter. It worked fine, except when hooked up to my sirius, I got a lot of noise. So I hooked in a noise filter, but now I wasn't getting stereo sound - it was only coming out of the left side.

As I was changing the stereo wires, the power on the stereo went out. Now, I can't get any display or sound out of it. The climate controls still work, though.

I disconnected everything and re-plugged it in. I checked fuses but nothing is blown.

Any suggestions?

(Oh, and I have an appointment on Tuesday with the dealer - with the aux-in adapter removed, of course)

it's the sylflex aux-in adapter that goes in the tape adapter.

I put it in and it worked fine, but I was picking up some ground noise from my sirius radio (powered by the car)

So i got a ground loop adapter from radio shack - it hooks up after the 1/8 inch line with a y-splitter to the RCA lines. I hooked that up but I wasn't getting stereo sound (It was only coming out of the left speakers) As I was switching the wires, the power went dead on the head unit and display and that's all.

The car is sitting at the dealer's now, but I'd still like to know what you guys think.

Did you disconnect the battery while doing this?

the other guys who fried their system with the Syflex unit never disconnected their battery and/or incorrectly seated the unit otherwise it should work

I had originally removed the stereo (without disconnecting the battery) and installed the adapter. The adapter was working for about 1 week.

when I had the problem, I was just switching the 1/8 cable from the adapter to another cable. I wasn't removing the adapter at all.

When you say the other guys fried their system, did they just fry their stereo or other stuff?

In my car, not only is the stereo with no power, but the console (where the clock and the temperature display is) is out, too.

the display out is normal as the HU drives that display

in my mind one of three things happened:

A) something is not fully connected properly and thus nothing is working

B) the fuse for the Radio Blew out, easy fix, swap in a new one

C) the HU was blown and needs to be replaced

I am hoping for you it is A or B but the other guys all had C.

does the head unit control the display, too? like the clock and temperature displays?

I checked the fuses, nothing looked blown (checked under the hood and in the driver's side kick panel

Also, is the PIE adapter a safer alternative to the Sylflex module or is a similar procedure required?

yes the HU controls the display, and connected to the emergency flasher system, that is why people have such a hard time removing the HU for aftermarket, they need to keep the HU core for those functions

as for the PIE yes it is a safer alternative, the internals are not exposed and it reduces the possibility of grounding to the hu's core...which is my guess on how it blows...also there were grounding problems with the unit but
I believe the grounding issue was fixed by a few guys by grounding the device properly or something, sorry I havent' kept up with the info

on the other hand the syflex product does work with HUs that are before firmware 9.55 as well...but then again you can update the HU through Mazdaparts for pretty cheap (with the PIE plus upgrade package)

I think I'm ditching that sylflex unit. Too bad, I liked the idea. PIE will be the next one.

I'm not sure why the sylflex was not encased in plastic, but that probably would have helped any type of "static" buildup that could have occurred.

not being sarcastic, just people are bashing a product when it is more than likely operator error.

i have the syflex unit and had to install a ground loop isolator, but i did it with all the power off. no issues here.

i also have one of the earlier models i think it is # 61.

i really hate it for you the whole head unit integration is a pain in this car.

I think the Syflex unit as a concept is great...but as a retail product it is crude...a simple aluminum or plastic case or even basic sheath would solve all these problems...aluminum would be best for heat dissapation if that is a problem

I agree. The concept is good and it seems to work fine... except in the hands of the inexperienced, like myself.

I guess I didn't realize that changing the cable that goes into 1/8 jack (like the headphone jack) required the power to be off. Now I know.

Oh well.
