Help Needed

i am looking to get some help on subwoofer choices. i plan on ordering a zenclosures custom box from ebay cut for 1 10" sub preferably on the passenger side, then mounting the amp on the other side of the box that is not cut. this is how i did it before and i loved the look.

i talked to an online rep from crutchfield today asking them what products they would recommend and i just wanted to run them by y'all to see what y'all thought.

the guy recommended this sub:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-SomprlU...0&I=2067C10VR4
with this alpine amp:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-SomprlU...0&I=500MRPM450

but, i have tried this whole sub thing before and part of the problem was that it was tooo loud for me, so this time i am trying to do it right the first time. i really really want to have a remote bass controller so that if the sub is too loud, i can adjust it right there, no problem. i also like this because i listen to a lot of different music (ALL rock and then rap too), so when i want to crank it up and get krunk with a rap song i can, or if i just want to put dave matthews on and chill and not be blown outta my car i can do that easily. so, i asked him how much more i would have to spend to get this feature and he told me this one: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-SomprlU...20&I=206ZX4001

it is definetely worth the $100 for me to have this remote. i still think that i would go to bestbuy, circuitcity, and hifibuys before i did anything just to make sure that they don't have a better option for me for less, since i just realized that i can get both of those kicker products at circuit city so i wont have to deal with shipping issues from crutchfield.

i know its a lot, but i really would appreciate an honest opinion and any other suggestions you may want to include. thanks a lot for y'alls help in advance!

-thanks, chad

In my old car I had a JL 250/1 and it was more than I ever needed. However, that sub was mounted in my back seat instead of a trunk so you may need a little more kick. I would recommend going somewhere local and getting the amp kit installed, since no matter what you are goign to get it, and then see if they will let you try some stuff in your car. They should be more than willing to give you some options so you get what is right for you.

Alright cool, anybody else got anything to add?

I install for Circuit City. Those are the same retail prices we offer in store for both the amp and sub. Sometimes the CVRs will go on a Buy-One-Get-One type sale. Once in awhile though. Usually its the MTX gear. (Seems like every other week, MTX gear is BOGO) Circuit City also offers City Advantage Warranty on both products. I recommend thinking about picking it up on the sub. Just because Circuit City does an in-store over the counter swap out on all speakers. I see it EVERY SINGLE DAY. Walk in with a blown sub, walk out with a brand new in box one. As long as it's not OBVIOUS psychical damage. (Multiple pen holes in the cone, etc) The warranty on the amp however, is not swap out. It's sent out for repair. Kinda a pain in the ass to be without an amp for a few weeks IMO. Hence me recommending on the sub only.

You planning on installing it all yourself? Just to let you know, most Circuit City's do not include the remote bass boost knob install in the labor charge. Some may out of good nature, but it's common practice at my shop not to hook it up at all unless the customer pays extra or specifically mentions it's a big deal. (I know. I know. :icon_no2: I just work there) Small stuff like that is different shop to shop. Another example, my shop solders EVERY SINGLE connection. I know MANY shops just crimp.:icon_no2:

Anyhow, I currently have a single 12" in the Zen box powered off 420WRMS. (The sub channel on the Kicker ZX700.5) Plenty more than enough. Oh and IMO, I would SERIOUSLY consider the 4080 box for your sub vice the Zen box. The Zen quality is perfect, don't get me wrong, but it's just too big. The 4080 box is a little more expensive, but tucks into the corner and leaves you TONS more room in the trunk. I don't even use the trunk and I'm telling you.... coming from someone who owns it..... the Zen box takes up a lot of space. I have already purchased two 10"s CVRs with plans of selling my 12" and junking the Zen box for two 4080 boxes. You're already planning on using a single 10". Perfect.

Thanks for all that, that is the help I am looking for. I thought about the 4080 box and I would use it, but I lose being able to put golf clubs in the back. Not to mention, it costs double what a zen does when you include shipping.

really? Hmm.... with just one of the 4080 boxes? Well, if so and you golf a lot... I see your point. Gotta keep the priorities straight.:jump:

I believe there was a thread around here of someone installing a sub so it poked out of the center console-bin thing. I think he made his own box, but I've done that myself, and really it's not hard. You could probably get a good 10" and mount the amp against the back of a seat.

Alright cool, thanks for the ideas.

I was mainly starting this thread to get some help with the products though and not so much the enclosure. Are these products good as in sound quality and can they take some abuse? Would there be better sub/amp out there to fit my needs?
