Exterior Trunk Release Button...

This might be a ridiculously ridiculous idea, but i hope not:

Is it possible to wire up a button in place of the key-hole that opens up the trunk from outside? I HATE how there's not trunk opening button on the actual trunk!

I figure, it'd go in the same place as the backup camera does... i'm sure its possible to find a push-button that fits nicely and that looks good and matches its surrounding...

and i don't think it'd be all that hard to hook up... The hardest part would be finding a way to disable the button if the car is locked.... but even this wouldnt be so difficult if i could find a wire somewhere that goes +12 with the car locked and ground when unlocked, or anything like that.

so, anyone interested in helping out? I think this would be a really cool, practical, and functional mod...

I don't want to sound like this is a flame but there isn't a way to word it so it doesn't... but what is wrong with the trunk release on your key? and if you don't have one wouldn't it be easier to get a key that has one insead of doing the button?

StealthTL 10-17-2006 10:08 PM

Key....

The keyhole "where the backup camera goes" is just that - a keyhole.

So you propose putting a button where the present lock cylinder is?

There would be NO wiring to do, because the lock already controls the opener solenoid, so just yank out the keylock and mount your button - no problems!

(....could you send me a p.m. of where you park it in the evenings? I want to see how it turns out - yeah, that's the ticket - "How it turns out!")

if you had the advanced keyless remote system, there is a button to press outside the car to pop the trunk... but i'm assuming you don't have that system either, so, yeah, when you pm stealth after you get it done hit me up as well

Funny, I've actually wondered why there's so many ways to open the trunk on the car. I thought 3 ways to do it was too many

1145climber 10-18-2006 06:06 AM

no, i do have the remote.... its just, often in my garage, the keys are in the car and the car is unlocked and i want to open the trunk, or the keys are in the house, and the car is unlocked... my garage is pretty small so its a pain in the ass to have to carefully open the door without hitting the other car in the garage just to get to the button... or if its just parked around and im loading stuff into my trunk, itd make it much easier to be able to open and close it right there

is it only me that thinks it would be convenient to have this button? all the rest of my family's cars have them, and we use them all the time...

and Stealth: good point, all the wiring should be right there...

lol to where i park it at night, but if i do the install reasonably well, then i dont see how someone could break the button, and somehow break into my trunk... i'd wire it in such a way that there'd be a relay connected to the "car locked?" wire but have this relay out of site... that way, even if they broke the button, and had the two wires going to the button, theyd both be dead so long as the car remained locked....

and even so, i doubt a thief would recognize this "weakness" as a point of entry... also, maybe worst comes to worst id get the stuff in my trunk stolen if both of the above considerations fail... but itd be tough to get into the trunk, break down the pass-through, FIT through the pass-through, and then hot-wire my car and drive it off.... dont think itd put me at much more risk of having my car stolen.

This is from my old car site, but principle should be the same.

this is to add a remote door popper, or in this case modified to open the trunk.

may give you some ideas, if it doesnt help, oh well :)

Requires car to be on, but can work the power wire to coincide with the doors being unlocked

I think what he meant was the advance key remote found on the Shinka2. With the card remote, once you're near the car, or if your car is unlock, you can open the trunk by pressing a button to the right side of the license plate light.

kind of. maybe i wasnt clear. what i meant was, a lot of cars have BUTTONS on the outside of their trunk, that open the trunk... the BMW M5 has a long narrow one where you put your hand to open the trunk, my brother's old S4 had the actual key-hole double as a button, and as long as it was unlocked, you'd just press in on the key-hole and it would pop the trunk...

im sure you know what i mean, i just want a way to have a trunk release button on the outside of my trunk.... nothing too fancy, no wireless radio controls or anything... just a button

you could always leave your trunk open. I see many rx8s with their trunks popped open in public. You cant tell unless you know what to look for.

My keys are on me 24 hours a day. I never have this problem.

StealthTL 10-18-2006 04:00 PM

AAhh...

I see your problem now, garage entry!

I hate the location of the stock trunk release, one of my first mods was to move the button up by the DSC button.

Now it's window accessible. :)

DIY?

StealthTL 10-18-2006 05:25 PM

Nope....

No DIY, I bought a JDM switch from Canzoomer for the rear fog light, but didn't use it.

The original switch just 'grounds' the live wire to open the trunk, so any 'momentary contact' switch would work, just moved the wires to the new button.
