Dynamat Alternative
 

I spent most of yesterday sound dampening my trunk. Tomorrow I am going to do the rest of the car (interior, doors, roof). I was suprised to see that the trunk already had some sound dampening material in it. This stuff is 105 mils thick, compared to 70 mils for dynamat extreme. Any ideas or comments on how to install this stuff would be nice, it was hard work.

what is it called, what did it cost, and after doing just the trunk, did you notice any improvement in sound quality?

Looks like BQuiet Extreme, I have it in the doors and trunk. Looks like you did a nice job. I think it is about half the cost of Dynamat Extreme. I don't remember about the thickness but I thought it also weighed less than dynamat. My whole install weighed in at about 10Lbs.

On the doors, I took off the plastic inner panel on the first one, a big mistake. I did this after talking to them and they said get it as close to the outer metal as possible. Well there is dead air space behind the plastic panel and nothing to secure it to. It causes you to have to deal with the window brackets and holders for electric windows and if you have tint, watch out, this stuff is so sticky you can't get it off anything, it is like tar and if it catches on your tint screen...well you know the rest.

So on the 2nd door I installed it over the plastic panel, not sure what sound deadening difference it makes but the install is much easier and cleaner this way.

It is Rattle Trap by FatMat. It cost $170 for 70 square feet, even though they sent me 81 square feet for some reason :). I haven't pun the subs back in yet so I don't know how it works. I plan doing the rest of the car tomorrow so by then I should know if I wasted my money or not.

Has anyone noticed a difference in road noise?

Yeah, it's much louder since I got the Greddy. :D

Seriously, this stuff does make a difference I ran it with the stock exhaust for a while, putting it in knowing I was going to be changing out the exhaust. The bass sounds better and I didn't have to run with the volume as loud to compensate for the road noice, now I have to run with the volume louder to compensate for the exhaust noise, which I don't mind at all.

WARNING: when doing the interior, especially the roof, you will be removing the side piller covers for the air bags - DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

This goes for any time you are working around the air bags. Other than that, there's really nothing special to installation

How do you remove the roof panels?

Today we did the the floors of the car.

As of now, i'm just waiting on an answer about how to remove the roof panels. It's kind of holding me up here.

Has anyone noticed that this stuff stinks... my car smells like tar. Will this smell subside?

Yeah the smell will go away in time.....I had a ton of FatMat in my last car.

Hey Rotary Rasp I noticed for the roof you used Dynamat Xtreme why didn't you use what you originally used (Fatmat)?

Because I ran out of the fatmat and a friend gave me the dynamat for free.

Ahh... did you notice any difference with ease of installing or with noise when you did the roof?

I know 100 square feet of the Fatmat weighs 29 lbs ;)

I took that into consideration but decided that having a more quality interior is worth the small appreciation in weight. At least it is not added to the wheels :D:

The real dynamat installed much easier, compared to the fatmat. The shipping weight for the fatmat was was 40lbs, so about 30 sounds right. (there was extra crap in the box)

Wow Rasp, that came out REALLY nice. bravo! As I mentioned to you on Saturday, I'm thinking about doing this to the trunk and I was thinking about ordering the Dynamat Trunk Kit or should I go with the fatmat?

You said the stuff sticks like tar? Is this a one way street? The reason I ask is I was wondering what do auto repair shops do when the damage goes into the sound dampening area?
