Dye the Floor-Mat Script?

I like the factory floor mats, but I'm trying to add more color to my almost all-black cloth interior. My OEM floor mats have the RX-8 script in white (or is it silver?). My car is red.

I would like to dye the script red, without messing up the surrounding fabric. Any suggestions as to (1) the best way to mask off the surrounding fabric; and (2) the best way to dye the script?

Right now I'm thinking of (1) masking off the area with masking tape, and using an X-Acto knife to cut away the tape where it covers the script; and (2) using either red permanent marker or red fabric spray (if such a thing exists) for the color.

Any suggestions or comments? I want this to look professional and last a long time. TIA.

why not invest in some higher quality mats? I order Lloyd heavy weight mats with a tan leather monogram of my nickname 'Dre' that are 1/2" thick. I'll post pics later--but maybe if you decided to dye the script--your best bet will probably be to use some type of red permanent pen and be very careful.

Thanks for the tip; I don't know Lloyd's.

I'm just being cheap right now. Also, the design of the premium OEM mats that Trussville sells didn't look that attractive to me (at least in the pictures), and the all-weathers look too heavy-duty for my needs. I'm following the Wal-Mart mat thread, but still haven't seen pictures.

My thought was to wear out the OEM mats, then upgrade them when they're worn out. Right now they're in great shape and I actually like them pretty well.

I like the OEM mats too...as for the walmart thread I already posted pictures they are really nice but they are HEAVY duty....meant for snow....controlling tracked snow

this is a guess but I feel it may work...take the red dye or dye of your choice and get a tiny paint brush...load just a drop of dye on the brush and slowly glide it over the RX8 strands....you probably don't even need to tape anything up...just start from the middle of the thread since it will spread out...you can even try this with a lighter color to test it the movement of the dye on the strands then move to a darker color to finish...if you do this show us pics...sounds cool :) :)

Thanks, man! Maybe some Rit (or is it RIT?) dye? I think they well it at the grocery store, don't they?

Also, Truemagellan, while you did post some pix on the Wal Mart thread, they are not of the Wal Mart mats, are they? If not, I still want to see those Wal Mart mats.

oh right...woops sorry about that :o you can get dye at Target, Walmart, etc. maybe even go to walmart (they are evil) get the dye and look at the mats yourself :)

Evil, yes, but it couldn't hurt just this once to patronize them. It's only $20, after all.

... Or could it?

Anyway, thanks.

www.lloydmats.com and www.ggbailey.com are some good aftermarket mats.

Cool; thanks. I wonder if anyone makes a luxurious black mat with red trim and a big red rotary symbol in the middle. That would be sweet.
