mikeb 08-14-2003 07:49 PM

i dont think you will ever see something from mazda to play dvd movies on the nav screen. mazda does not want to be liable for a driver watching a movie instead of watching the road, that is why it does not play movies only to help you find your location. (if you read the instructions it says not to use while driving, just type in where you want to go then shut it and it will tell you when to turn, that way you are not distracted by watching the triangle move across the screen). you might be able to buy another dvd player and somehow wire it in it would void any warranty on the sytem though.

I poked around the panasonic web site and couldn't find anything, then did a basic web search with Alta Vista (like google) and found a UK panasonic web site. They have a variety of players that play both movies and nav through our system plus a remote control that the US web site doesn't offer. I guess they're not as litigous in the UK as we are. As to whether they'll work with the US, I dunno. We have different TV systems, right (PAL vs NTSC or something like that.)

i'm not sure that would make a difference...PAL and NTSC are analog signals...the nav screen is a digital LCD...i'm pretty sure you can play both PAL and NTSC on any laptop which is comparable to what the the DVD-Rom is in the car

I contacted Nav-Tv and they said that they said to look for a module for the Rx8 in the near future. Heres a link to their site Nav Tv

Now that's way cool. Thnx for the link and I'll be checking back for their '8 module.

how possible would it be to simply replace the dvd-nav unit in the 8 with a UK spec DVD-Nav system from Europe...that actually plays DVD movies. What if the remote control that is already integrated into our cars could be connected to the new Panasonic DVD-Nav system that plays movies.....that would be the cleanest setup possible in my opinion...there's even a tv tuner sold on the panasonic uk site. is it possible?!?!! Oh yeah, 8_wannabe, could u give us the actual link to the website that you found with all the dvd stuff??

Bengal Tiger 08-22-2003 02:18 AM

All these different systems would help make the DVD/Tv system possible...does anyone know the actual procedure in connecting the Multi Tuner between the Navigation systems video output and the LCD screen video input??

A UK/Spec DVD player will not play your region1 DVDs.

all i want is a TV tuner and nothing more...i don't really need my DVD-Rom to be able to play DVDs as that's just a luxury i can do without...it's be GREAT to have it but i'm not gonna spend an extra $400 to have it done...

on the other end i DEFINITELY want to be able to watch regular TV programming like the news or sports while i'm driving...i would also like to control the channel and volume from the steering column and/or the dvd navigation controls...i would gladly pay $400+ for this capability

DVD & TV Tunner for NAV system

I recently added a TV Tuner & 10 DVD changer to my RX-8.

It's great for morning news & sports. The DVD player comes in handy in long road trips.

Go to AVElectronic they sold me the equipment:

Here's where the NavTV unit was installed:
NavTV unit and the DVD changer is in the trunk.

Good luck and enjoy!

tommy12g 11-10-2003 08:43 AM

Their DVD players wont work in the US , different region code, unless you only buy that region code Movies

Thommino 11-23-2003 07:01 AM

FernandoGator How much did you pay for all (installation inclused).
Is There an European version? PAL + DVD region 2 version?
How you DVD and TV turner work. Navigation System work togheter tv or dvd system. How can you pass fram the first to the second? And while are you watchinf the tv can you have route indication?
Thnaks

RX-MEN-8 11-23-2003 09:14 AM

To Fernando gator: What store installed it for you? or was it a DYS intallation? How has it been working so far? Any glitches? This sounds really intresting if it works.. X-Men2 here we come?

FernandoGator 11-23-2003 12:30 PM

To "RX-MEN-8"
The system was installed by "Traffic Jams Car Audio" in Duluth, GA. It was a very good installation. I paid them $400. I purchased the parts from AVElectronic. They have a new unit now.

To "Thommino"
You need to check with AVElectronic about a European version.
The TV tuner is built-in to the unit that controls the NAV signal and the others. Once I switch to TV/DVD I use the small remote control that comes with the NAV-TV unit to control the TV, AV 1, AV2, and AV 3 signals. AV 1 is my 10-DVD changer. Next to the center console power outlet I have AV 2 RCA inputs for an external unit (like a game console). I have a second 7" LCD display between the two rear seats. This is held by a goose neck which is bolted down using one of the bolts from the driver’s seat (very clean). While watching TV/DVD the NAV system keeps giving me audible route indications.

Whoever installs these systems need to know how to retrieve radio... My Mazda dealer faxed me a copy of a bulletin that described how to do this.

I'm very satisfied with the system. Soon I'll take a few more pictures of the entire setup...

Good luck!

Thommino 11-23-2003 03:00 PM

I hope that there is an Italian version (Pal - Region 2 DVD).
How much did you pay for all this upgrade? (Navigation TV Tuner System with Antenna - US$ 525.00 + Optional 10-Disc DVD/MP3/CD/VCD/SVCD Changer System- US$ 595.00 + Installation $400) -->about $1600
Where do you put the original Mazda CD-changer (6 disks).
Can you make a lot of pictures?
Thnaks a lot

rabinabo 11-23-2003 05:29 PM

I would guess that all you need to get is a different dvd player, which is the only thing that is affected by region. The audio/video feeds are all the same anywhere you go, right?

FernandoGator 11-23-2003 07:44 PM

Yes, the DVD changer/player is the only thing that needs to change to work in Europe.

I did not get a 6-CD changer. I got the MP3 player instead. It holds more music in a single CD than 6 regular audio CDs (at 128 kpbs or higher). I wanted to be able to change the MP3 CD from the front and not have to go to the trunk to change it. It reads the full ID3 tag. Each subdirectory off the root is presented as a CD (CD 1, CD 2, CD 3, etc.) with full description of the Artist and the song... Plus I can change the songs from the stearing wheel. Very nice!

The changer is in-dash, not in the trunk.
You just load all of the CDs through the front slot just like the regular CD player.

Also the TV tuner and the Radio Tuner in Italy (Europe) is different.I think. Pal for Tv and fm (87.50 - 108.00)
In Italy Mazda RX-8 has already 6 disks cd changer. It's not an optional. But I don't know if read MP3 and DVD video.

Thommino 11-24-2003 10:34 AM

Hi Thommino,

We are in the testing period for the PAL system. Please check back in about 3 weeks.

Thanks,
