Dash Mold Opinons
We need your opinion on what most people would want for an "In-Dash" Monitor as far as a dash mold goes. Please cast your vote and post other ideas.
Thanks! |
A dash-top stealth (retractable) mount would be perfect as far as I'm concerned :)

Would you care if it was a manual flip up screen to make it cheaper?
|
nope.

Flip up 8" sounds awesome to me. The screen is the only thing holding up my carputer :(
|
8inch where the current nav screen is now is definitely doable btw especially if it isn't motorized :)
|
Will it be a single din style ;)
Make it possible for those that would like an aftermarket stereo. |
Flip-up or retractable single DIN, manual operation would be fine - I don't even care if it's 7" or 8". In fact, 7" would be OK for most practical purposes, and the screens are usually cheaper too.
|
Why would motorizing the screen matter if it was molded above the temp and climate control display?
|
If anything is going to be motorized it it would only apply to the screen on top of the dash.
|
That's fine, reason I ask is my Kenwood Excelon has the mask feature which means motorized face. :) |
I understand.....We might do 1 din molds later.
|
Yeeesssss!

I would like to note that an 8" screen on top of the dash may be a little more difficult to conceal as well as see over when driving.
|
What size is the Nav?
I am guessing it can be sunk into the dash some so it is not as intrusive to the view of the road. |
Can you guys do a double DIN where the factory radio is, either moving the AC controls to the cigarette tray, or just keeping them where they are now? That'd be sweet too, as long as we can do away with the headunit completely. Moving it to the trunk really isn't as clean as I would like...

I beleive you still have to have the headunit in the car somewhere for the AC controls. Is this correct?
|
One thing we are looking at is detatching the head unit from it's face plate. Then moving the factory head unit back about 1 1/2" - 2" and placing a screen in place. This would involve moving the A/C controls down to the ash tray. We would then use a CarPC with FM tuner rather than an actual head unit.
|
There's a PCB inside the HU that you need to keep. I think I've read of some people ditching the bulk of the unit and keeping only the PCB, but I'm not sure.
Anyways, I'd love to have a retractable nav screen replacement (one that includes everything a non-nav 8 would need). Perhaps you could make with manual operation (for the cost conscious), but also have an option to add automatic operation. |

you could easily put an 8 inch in there especially if you keep the top of the stock Red LED display low profile instead of bubbled up to align with the rest of the dash (which won't be needed anymore since the screen will be there :)) I have stock NAV now and I'll see if I can find an 8 inch LCD to put up against it to prove my point :) maybe you could design it for 8 inch with a border for 7 inch or no border at all...just a closed front so customers can cut out the size they want...or have multiple screens or mount guages and a small screen, etc. |
More than likely these molds will already have the screens in them, so there are no fitment issues. There are many shapes and sizes of screens.
|
what kind of LCD screens will be in them?
(I would recommend 800x600 minimum d-sub computer input with 1024/768 prefered with video in as well) |
It would have VGA as well as a RCA input.
|
That's good having both VGA and RCA but what does a person do if the screen replaces the head unit? Need sound right?
