Customised Navi dash carputer vs 2DIN stereo replacement carputer?

Hi there,

I'm looking at installing an android based carputer in my RX8, but can't decide which configuration and would appreciate some input. Which option would you choose and why?

Option 1 -
Get a dash hood and replace the OEM navigation with a custom Android tablet.

Pro's:
- better viewing for GPS etc..
- looks pretty cool and I can open/close the unit as I wish

Cons:
- I won't be able to have rear view/camera inputs (easily) and most likely no steering controls
- Will have to wait longer to get it done
- Stuff like web/email may serve more of a distraction as it will be right in my face (but admittedly if the hood is closed, it's out of sight)

Option 2 -
Get one of these 2DIN units (there's an australian supplier with currently available units) :
... re=related

Replace the center fascia with http://kanatechs.jp/english/products/tbxe/t003.html and stick the 2DIN unit in there:

Pro's:
- more well rounded unit
- steering control + camera inputs
- better UI for cars

Con's:
- Less desirable viewing for GPS etc..
- I'd be modifying the car from it's original condition
- The clock and audio information in the information-center-display become disabled.
- Switching of the air conditioning control button becomes slow and soundless

Really depends upon what your goals are. Forget all your options for a second, and tell me what you want out of your headunit?

Next, are you willing to pay a monthly fee for 3G wireless service for your tablet?

Lastly, your "option 2" doesn't work. I have no idea what you're trying to post there. I assume it's a 2-din all-in-one CarPC or something.

Hi mate, that's weird the youtube link doesn't work for option 2. It's a Rydeen 2DIN Android unit.

What I would ideally like (forgetting all options) are as follows:

- GPS/navigation
- Ability to play music from the internet (whether its streaming from my phone or not)
- Aesthetic appeal
- Steering control
- ideally a rear view camera
- maybe email notifications (although not crucial)
- Handsfree phone functionality

Thanks :)

FYI the rydeen unit he is referring to is the DV612 IIRC

Again, do you plan on paying a monthly bill for wireless internet in your car?

Suppose you installed the tablet, how did you plan on porting the audio into your RX8's audio system?

An AuxMod (or a similar method) would be just fine for that...

G'day :)

Thanks for taking time to help me think this through.

I would most likely tether internet from my cellphone (i have huge data cap). I will also add a bluetooth + usb connectivity kit which will let me stream audio to the sound system via bluetooth or usb.

Worth noting, the 2DIN unit from my understanding has it's own maps program + GPS in addition to the Android navigation, so if it weren't connected to the internet, I can use that GPS function.
