Custom Aftermarket Nav Install (looking for opinions)
 

I had a piece of shit Magellan nav unit that died, and I'm probably replacing it with a Garmin unit very soon. The Garmin only comes with a windshield mount which I don't think will work every well due to the extreme angle of out windshields. Also, I've taken my radio out many times so I've taken a close look at the innards of my center console. I'm thinking of removing the ash tray & lighter "assembly" and making some sort of mounting in there for the unit to hook on it. Has anyone every done anything like this before. Any aftermarket mounts for this area? Even a simple framework that has the snaps and screw holes in the right place so I could weld or rivet on to it? The Garmin unit isn't as wide as the hole will be also, any ideas how I can fill out the space on the sides so it looks nice, and you don't see into the guts of the car?

I'm not sure how wide or deep the unit your looking at will be, but I thought about the same thing, for either a gtech style unit or gps..and my idea was get a replacement ash tray door, and cut into that or mount it to that. Not sure how well it would work. or you could go with a proclip mount
