Component vs. Coaxial
Is there a big difference in the sound quality of components versus coaxials? From what I have read so far, in most cases it appears there isn't that big of a difference any more. I know that you want to have your tweeters aimed at you, but isn't it possible to have a coaxial in the front and a new tweeter were it is now?

You can certainly do that.
There are even some coaxial speaker models with tweeters that can be aimed, so you can direct them towards the listener. The Focal 6x9 speakers in my car (the least expensive Focal models) have that feature. The way I see it, one of the major differences between coaxial and component speakers is the fact that components have a crossover whereas coaxials usually don't. That allows them to better separate the highs from the lows. Although there are some coaxial speakers with crossovers, but that's rather unusual AFAIK. I think with good coaxial speakers you can get decent sound, it is not a must to go the component route. However, I went with components in the RX-8 and in my previous car too (at least in the front). Coaxials are just fine for the rear IMO. |

Anyone have opinions on Memphis speakers?

I'm not sure about their speakers but I've heard good things about their subwoofers.

Thanks guys.. appreciate all the info. How difficult is it to make the a template so that you can fit a 6.5 component in the 6x8 door opening?

Very simple. Get a piece of lexan, take off the door panel, remove the factory speaker and trace the shape of the speaker mount onto the lexan with a permanent marker. Also, trace the opening for the factory speaker so that you know how to position the 6.5" speaker. Cut the lexan with a jigsaw.
Piece of cake really. |
