Component Speaker Installation Question
 

Hi All,

I am considering swapping some high efficiency after market speakers into my 8 to replace the not so hot base audio system it currently has (not the Bose).

I am trying to do this on the cheap, so I am not looking to use any external amps, if possible.

My question is if I put in 6.5" component speakers by Alpine (or any brand, for that matter) using a custom speaker plate, can I use the crossover that comes with the speakers, or does the base sound system have its own amplification system that has crossover frequencies built in (forcing me to buy an external amp to bypass it). I have heard that the Bose system does have its own amp system, but I am hoping the base does not...

Anyone know if I can just put in the Alpine Type S 6.5" components in the front, and 6x9's (I was thinking maybe Boston Acoustics Rallys) in the back without any hassles?

Also, another alternative would be to only change the fronts, and leave the stock 6x9s in the rear as is (as I hear they are difficult to swap). Any thoughts on this alternative would also be appreciated.

and then search for the various posts people have made with detailed photos of the installation process (Tamas, Omicron and Genom all had helpful posts along this topic, and others have as well). Yes, you can replace both fronts and rears with the speaker sizes you are asking about, although I can't specifically comment on the fitment of the Alpines or BAs. As for the stock front "crossovers" there is a high pass filter circuit built into the tweeters. You're going to attach your Alpine crossover right next to your door woofer in the stock Bose mounting position (there's nothing there but holes for you right now) and probably only one screw will match, but that's OK. Then you're going to attach your stock speaker wiring to the woofer to the crossover input, and you're going to ignore the stock wiring to the tweeter entirely, running your own from the crossover up to your new tweeter.

I stated this pretty clearly in the referenced thread but replacing the 6x9s is NOT difficult. It may seem daunting since you need to pull out the rear seats (actually others have done it without this, but I still can't quite visualize it) but you'll laugh when you do it and realize how easy that particular task is.

I agree, you need to use the crossovers that come with the component speaker set.
