im tryin to install a good mp3 adapter in my rx8 for my i pod.but i hate usin that shit that goes into the lighter and u have to use a fm frequency cuz thats shitty ass quality.is it true that rx8's dont have rca inputs, like the red and white plugs?cuz thats wat i was tryin to install then somebody told me rx8's dont have rca inputs.is there a good ipod or mp3 adapter that is good quality?

I too have been trying to intergrate my iPod in my new (04) rx8. I obtained a unit from Dension Inc...you can find them online. They have one that is specific for the rx8 as the stock Bose Headunit can be hard to intergrate. I have had problems getting this accomplished. When the Dension Ice-Link was installed by professionals (it can be done by yourself if real handy with this sort of thing) my HU suddenly was not functional. It would power the iPod, but now the radio/cd wouldn't function, nor would the scroll screen on the HU and mode/AC switch. My tech. checked everything from fuses to grounds and all was ok. I have since taken the car back to the dealer as it is still under warrenty and am having the HU replaced. This will be done in the next several days....hence, this hasn't been as simple a process as I would have hoped. I don't think the problem is with the Dension unit. There are other similar units you can also find in any Crutchfield web site or catolog. Keep an eye out here, or let me know how to contact you and I'll keep you updated on how my problem shakes out.

I searched forever to get an interface for the car. I ended up with the Neo interface available at MP3yourcar.com. It is pricey, but the sound quality is worth it. The negatives of mine are:

1: The most usable interface is the Ipod interface. This makes the Ipod function as normal. It is supposed to disable the steering wheel functionality. Mine actually allows me to go up and down in the playlist for some odd reason.
2. The info in the car just shows gibberish.
3. The Neo interface is so slow, and the way you have to set up the playlists is too limited.

BUT: The sound quality is so awesome, that I have never regretted the decision!

There are supposed to be two new units coming out this year that adress all these issues. If so, I will upgrade... but until then, I will have to "suffer" with my expensive, limited, and slow interface.

I bought the Neo Ion from mp3yourcar as well. I too found iPod mode to be the only usable mode. In general, when it worked, it was great. Good sound quality, and I could skip to the next track with the steering wheel button (since I generally just put my iPod on random anyway).

But it was infuriatingly flaky. Sometimes it just didn't want to work. Sometimes it popped itself back into the wrong mode. Sometimes I had to reboot the stereo (or the whole car!) a couple times to get it to work. So, I took matters into my own hands and upgraded the firmware. I upgraded to version 3.xx, which turns out to be for a different piece of hardware. After many emails back and forth with tech support at mp3yourcar, we finally decided that I couldn't fix it, so they set me up with an exchange for a new unit.

When the new unit arrived, much to my great joy, it wasn't the neo ion / ICE-link (same thing) at all, but a new DICE unit. The new unit doesn't have the goofy mode where you have to set up a bunch of playlists, the crappy-looking custom display on the iPod, and you can always control the music through the iPod controls. Acording to the DICE instructions, it's got a nice interface where which CD you pick determines the behavior of the next/prev buttons (either track, album, playlist, or input). The random and repeat buttons are supposed to do the equivalent thing on the iPod, it's supposed to show the iPod text on the car radio, and it has a 1/8" phono aux input.

The bad news? None of that shit works, except for the next/prev buttons. Maybe it's my old-ass 3rd iPod (pre-clickwheel), I dunno. I haven't fucked with it much. The good news is that it works every time, the sound quality is awesome, the iPod control is always on, and it at least shows the correct track time (but not the song name). So, I put my iPod on random like I always do and now I can listen to music and skip to the next track with the steering wheel button.

Come to think of it... when I upgraded from the ICE-Link to the DICE unit, I used the old cable (that one that plugs into the head-unit) because I *really* didn't want to pull out my head unit again. The cables both have the same connectors on either end, but maybe the old one doesn't have all of them hooked up the way the new one does. eh...
