Audio system tuning audio file?
 

Hey, I just finished installing an Infinity Basslink in my trunk to go along with the Infinity References speaker upgrade (stock base stereo). Now I need to tune the thing for more or less flat audio as a starting point. If I know the settings for that, I can tweak as needed for a particular song but I'll know where to go back to.

Basically, I've got obviously limited tweakability, but I'd like to maximize what I do have, which is the bass, mid and treble controls on the head unit, and the lowpass cutoff (adjustable between 50 and 120Hz), gain and "bass boost" (-6db to +3db...not exactly sure what freq range is getting boosted there) on the Basslink.

So far I've turned down the head unit bass a couple clicks in order to relieve the main speakers of having to try to reproduce so much bass, and compensated by turning up the sub gain a bit...but I'd like to approach this a bit more scientifically. However, I don't have a spectrum analyzer or anything that fancy. Is there an audio file out there that steps through the audible spectrum so I can listen by ear for anything obviously louder or quieter than the others? Is this making any sense at all?

Only way to do it is to get yourself some listening material that you're very familiar with and try to make it sound how you feel it should.

To be honest, there aren't enough tonal controls to do much to the sound anyway, so you won't achieve anything close to audiophile quality sound because there just aren't enough adjustments. In a car, I don't think you'll ever find a set of speakers that do not require massive EQing to get correct sound/staging; especially in stock locations.

I used a Sound Level Meter to set up my home system for 5.1, so I guess I'm a audiophile. :D I always set up my car audio by ear but if you wanted to use a SLM this is how I would do it. Place SLM at the position of your head when driving. Play a test CD ( my home set up used a DVD ) if you can find one. If you can't find one play a CD on repeat for one song. Set all but one speaker to highest negative db ( select speaker by putting fade and ballance all the way front or back and right or left ) .Adjust volume till you get SLM to a good point then adjust bass and trebel to your ear. Do not adjust volume control , just db. Do the same selection process for other speakers and tune to same point on SLM with db setting. Your body will change SLM so read meter through closed window from outside of car. If your system does not have a seperate db control for each speaker you will just do the adjustment for left, right, and bass. You can get a SLM at Radio Shak for about $35. Hope this helps.
