anyone replaced the oil pressure gauge

has anyone replaced the stock oil pressure gauge with one that actually works?

I don't want to add an additional gauge..

Great question. I'm curious too.

bump?

I am interested too. While replacing the oil pressure guage how about we add oil temp?

DARKMAZ8 10-05-2005 09:41 PM

Just get a gauge pod.

The new miata's have a functional oil pressure meter :( ...I heard also that it was easy to adapt older mazda's to a functional gauge instead of an idiot light

Bump to find out if anyone has been able to replace the stock oil pressure and water temp gauges with analog ones. Would want them in the stock location (not pod) with real psi and F markings. What about mounting analog gauges with only the needle indicators showing and using decals to show psi & F?

I had hoped at one point that the oil pressure switch could simply be replaced by a proper oil pressure sensor, and that the gauge would read it..the problem starts with the sensor, because there really isn't one...just a switch. However its more complicated than that. The gauge itself is part of the whole dash pod, which can be viewed as this single electrical entity. The signal from the oil pressure switch is an input to the electronics that control the gauges, and the "brain" if you will controls the gauge. I assume there is a similar function going on with the water temp, although given the fact that a real sensor is used, there may be some hope in that department.

^^^The older Miatas had a similar issue. However, the cluster relayed whatever signal came from the oil pressure sender. All we had to do was swap the sender and gauge and *bam*: accurate oil pressure.

Hmmmm.

why do they even have an oil gauge in the rx8 if the thing doesn't accurately measure the oil.

Its actually misleading and i almost didnt add more oil because of it.

Even it if worked "properly" you wouldn't want to use it to tell you when to add oil. Its a pressure gauge, not an oil level indicator. There is one of those (the light) too.

Basically, you may think of our oil pressure gauge as an idiot light masquerading as a pressure gauge, because that's basically what it is.
