am i getting ripped off?

130 dollars for 4 gauge wiring to my amp and subs?

if not i guess i'll try to find a decent wiring kit and try it my self. any recommendations?

RX8Chillin 05-27-2009 05:30 PM

I would call it a rip-off depending on the brand of the wiring.... need more info to tell you for sure...

Um . . my Rockford Fosgate 4 Gauge amp kit was 45 Bucks :) FYI

I hate cable companies that claim to have higher quality cables and charge out the ass for them

yeah - I'd say you are.. although it might just be REALLY good wire, but I find it VERY difficult to justify spending 50 - 75 (or WAY more) dollars more than you should for "higher quality" wires, when there is little actual evidence they are better..

my advice is to go down to your local car audio place (not best buy) and ask them for some wires - they should cut you exactly what you need, in the color you want and it should be less than 2 dollars a foot

and with all that being said - I would like to mention that there is a quality difference in connections and equipment.. T-crimp connectors suck, and so do low quality RCA's because they allow noise into the system a lot easier than a power cable - if you're going to spend some money somewhere - it's in a good LOC, amp, and speakers

If it's hardware alone, you're being ripped off.

If that price includes labor for putting the wiring into the car, it's decent.

Just making sure they are not trying to sell you 4 gauge wire for wiring the sub from the amp. If they are trying that then get away from that shop.

Also, we need to know what all the wiring kit includes. RCAs? Distribution block? Battery terminals? A capacitor? Those will add to the price considerably.

As for the actual quality of the power wire, you'd need to know the percentage of copper used as well as the total cross-sectional area of the actual wire minus the insulation. MANY companies cheap out and either mix copper with another metal (usually aluminum) or they use thicker insulation and less actual wire, while still calling it 4 gauge. THAT should be illegal.

Let us know the name brand of the wiring kit and everything the kit includes. So far, I'd would have to say... yeah... that seems pretty high if it doesn't include labor.

Use knukonceptz in the future for your wiring needs. Been using them for... YEARS.

i have a sub and amp all ready, just needs wiring. the guy said 130 dollars, no wires showing. no capacitors. and i don't know what else he'll use. he said buying the kit is cheaper (80 dollars 4 gauge). and if i buy my own materials, he'll charge me 70 for install. i don't think a line out connector was mentioned, but i know i should use one for our 8's.

everything is by stinger. stinger 4 gauge, stinger terminals, stinger everything.

and thanks! i don't want to rush and jippwned.

firebirdude 05-28-2009 02:14 PM

It includes labor. That is a HUGE key you forgot to mention....

You're not getting ripped off. Could you possibly shave off a few bucks by buying online? You always can. But that quote is completely average and respectable.

anthony: no power cap?

I have a different view than the others. I have had the luxury of playing with all sorts of wire kits. I have seen 4 gauge kits that are another companies 10 gauge. I have seen distribution blocks that the plating flakes off the second you touch it, fuse holders that the metal is so weak that it snaps when you tighten the wire into it. You do indeed get what you pay for. Tsunami is a price leader, it is nowhere near the quality of Streetwires. Why should you think that they should be the same price? There is much more to a kit than a number given to a wire guage that is either bang on or totally out to lunch.

WVBoosted8 05-28-2009 11:02 PM

No that isn't getting ripped off. For a rockford 4 gauge kit installed I charge around 145.

That's exactly what I said...

But he said it was Stinger, so I dropped it. Stinger has always been quality.
