All black interior
 

Does any have or has anyone seen a true all black interior? I'm talking black headliner, visors, map light area, the works. I'm extremely interested in getting rid of some of the bland creamish tannish whatever it is interior on my 8. Thanks!

sounds like u bought the wrong car if u don't like the color.

Negative, I've had the car since '04 and I would just like to make the interior all the same color, almost like the majority of other cars in the world. I mean does anyone think that an all black interior would be a bad looking interior?

Never seen a full black interior. Most that any 8 has is the all black leather. Then everything below the windows is black.

If you go to a good upholstery shop, they can make your headliner black. Doing that though would make the grey plastic stand out alot.

You can paint the plastic, they aren't hard to remove. It will match, but won't look as good as stock unless it was done professionally. By professionally I mean, sanded and smoothed, painted black and then using a satin type of clear coat to finish it off and give it protection without being shiny. You definitely don't want it to be shiny when its that high, it would be very distracting while driving.

If you are really serious about this, I would try and get an extra piece of plastic (like an A pillar piece). This way you can try out different finishes and make sure it will look good before commiting to the whole car.

Thanks for the response Juice, I was thinking the same thing completely. I was just wondering if there was anyone on the forums that had possibly seen/done something with the plastic pieces that looked good. I have read about some "vinyl dyes" that you can spray onto hard plastic and its supposed to look good... I was honestly just hoping someone knew of an approach that didn't require painting of the plastic pieces as I imagine taking the sunglass holder apart to paint all of the pieces may be irritating.

I was thinking the same thing if I'm going to use paint, off to ebay I suppose.

I've heard of the vinyl dyes. Alot of guys use it to paint the front panels on computers. I have never used it myself though. It is supposed to basically sink into the plastic instead of sitting on top of it like paint would. This would make it pretty durable because it can't easily flake or chip off like paint.

Most autoparts stores sell the stuff, so I would try and get some plastic and see how it works.

I've also heard of using fabric dyes (like Rit). What is done here is you add the dye to water and boil the plastic in the dyed water. I don't know how good this works, but its also something to look into for the smaller pieces or the ones that aren't easily painted.

I don't think you are really looking for a "Vinyl Dye"...the parts that you need to cover aren't vinyl, they are plastic. And the only way I have seen to do plastic is that spray paint stuff that turns into a rubbery sort of substance when it dries. That stuff flakes off or rubs off easily...especially on parts that you would use often, like your sunglass holder. Im thinking that my buddy has a Speed6 with a black interior and that some of those parts might come over. I will try and catch up with him later.

Hmm fabric dye with water and boil eh? Thats an interesting idea, I would like to see the results of that actually. I found that a forum member named Kris has a shop doing something similar so I'm hoping he'll have some pics of whatever process the shop uses and I'll have at least some idea of what the plastic would look like. Here is a dye specifically for PVC and other hard plastics, comes in black and you can get gallons or an aerosol can of it.

i understand what u r asking. but, i'm thinking that if u had purchased a GT with black leather then it's pretty much all black. and, majority of the cabin would be black already- with the exception of the cabin roof & sun visors.

if u have any trace of tan in your car, then that means u either (a) must've gotten a shinka package of some sort or (b) got the chaparral leather GT package.

look at the two-toned black/red GT package. if you had ordered black, then everything red in this photo would be black. see the black leather pix.

I have a 2004 Winning Blue Metallic GT 6-spd. I have the interior that you described with the cabin being black other than the roof and visors. Those are actually the pieces that I would like to make black. Looks like I'm getting some good feedback on ideas, so after consulting with a shop around here I'm hoping to make a final decision. My goal is to make it look as OEM as possible while making the whole interior darker. It sounds like Juice has probably found the right spray on "dye" stuff in that Varibond stuff.

It's not the best. I had a '91 Miata for 14 years -- black interior and the inside of the convertible top was black. Top down was glorious but with the top up it was like being inside a black hole. If that's your thing or you're going for a certain look, then enjoy. After 14 years of that I needed some pizazz and went with a black/yellow interior :)

Hey Zeon i had the same idea and i went ahead and did it the only problem i ran in to was the sun roof was kind of hard to get that peice off but once off is easy to wrap the plastic peices i just scuffed them to get rid of any oils or dirt but not to much to to mess up the texture; On the visors i just replaced those with 12 inch monitors that are hooked with the indash unit all and all looks real good and really dark at night i would say do it i'll post pic when i get to work

If you plan on painting anything plastic and you still want it to have the look and durability with out scratching plastie dip it.
