Alcantara/suede wrapping ideas. Anyone tried this?
I've searched and found a member who alcantara wrapped his steering wheel, but I'm thinking of doing other parts as well, such as dash panels, center console covers, shift knob, etc. in addition to the steering wheel. I've got zero experience with this sort of project, so are there any pointers? For the dash panels, I was thinking maybe headliner spray adhesive would work, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be to remove in the future if repair/replacement of the fabric were necessary.

tacky.

Thanks for your opinion, but your post isn't even remotely helpful.

The RX-8 SP has a suede dash and I actually thought it looked pretty cool. I'm sure they did it to cut down glare on the track.
Check it out. I'm sure it's not easy to do this btw. |
Nice! Thanks for the link man. Looks better than I expected.
The good news is, a few good friends of mine from other states are familiar with alcantara wrapping and have given me numerous pointers. One mentioned investing in a steam machine to help relax the fabric to form it to complex shaped surfaces. He's done most of the interior in his WRX, a few TII's, etc. I'm sure it isn't easy by any means, but with patience and a "measure twice, cut once" attitude, I'm sure I could undertake such a project. |
I would love to see a leather/stitched covered dash like a Ferrari's...

Every $180,000 RX8 needs a $5000 stitched leather dash top, no wait ....

Actually a good dash wrap wouldn't be all that bad if done right! (To be honest I haven't done any searching on this material) I know that in older Porsches a really popular option was to get the dash wrapped in leather, alacantra, suede, etc with fancy stitching to fix or cover up cracked dashes. Options ranged from stitching patter, color and design.
Anyone got any pics of good lo-key wraps? Something to make the interior feel a bit more upscale |
I loved the look when I first did my a-pillars. Just be careful where you get your fabric from. The one I got from a local fabric store started to fade and now is yellowed. I have to find some more quality suede to do it with so it does not get affected by the heat/sun.
I always hated how the interior of the 8 is black but everything else above is that tan color. |
