aftermarket GPS systems
 

I did not order the NAV unit with my car but am looking for a quality GPS/mapping system to use that I can switch between cars. Does any one have any experience with these? I don't have the talent to rebuild my dash! so I am just looking for something portable that I can plug and go!

The Garmin Streetpilot III is actually a little more advanced than the standard RX8 system (I own both). Garmin introduced a newer unit (don't have the model #), that is supposed to be so much better under $1K. It's got a touch screen and uses standard memory cards. You won't regret it!

The main reason I like the installed unit is that I don't have to keep worrying about taking it out of the car, packing it up (or unpacking it). It was kind of a pain going out of the house with a briefcase, laptop, and GPS for a road trip...

I use the Garmin iQue 3600 PALM ..it's wonderful and has plenty memory to store several maps and it's car adapter is very versatile...i use it in and out of the cars, and it has the convenience of a Palm pilot built in...you can't go wrong with this one..I got it off Ebay for $450 including the car adapter and maps...

I've also got the Garmin iQue 3600 - there's a few of us here with this unit, do a search in this forum section for 'ique' or 'garmin' to find the previous discussions. The Garmin StreetPilot 2620 is a higher-end unit for car navigation, but is less versatile than the iQue and a fair bit more expensive.
