99% sure i solved the dvd mystery

so we figured out... cant make the dvd navigation play dvd's... you can't make a standard dvd player play navigation cd's so we need the convertor box... i am not about to pay for the avelectronics.. so i found an alternative... CAN SOMEONE PLEASE CONFIRM THAT WE HAVE RGB MONITORS WITH A SYNC LINE? If this is true then check out this site...

please if you feel this wont work, please leave a comment or give me some feedback..

Is this compatible on Mazda Rx-8?

mysql101 06-12-2004 07:50 AM

Looks promising. I'm interested if it works.

The output signals of the navi ecu unit are in fact r,g,b,sync.
Here is a wiring pinout provided by AVElectronics, posted by someone else on the board...

Anything is plug and play as long as you have wire, solder, tools, mill, and a lathe.

thew 06-12-2004 12:34 PM

yes RGB, and a sync ..

Why dont you like Avelectronics. ?

thew 06-12-2004 12:47 PM

ok .. looks like this will work fine.. you will have to do a bit more work to install it but yes.. you can make this work.

You still need to splice the same 4 wires behind the stock dvd unit. but that looks like it.. you will still have to use the FM modulation to get your audio into the head unit. ....

Looks like the biggest diffrance is the avelectornics unit gives you more inputs and outputs, and the nav screen output. Also his box comes with the deversity antinnas and the wiring harness is prelabeld for easy splicing.. he gives you the wiring diag from the mazda book.. wich is now all over this fourm.. I posted the pic of the harnes that has the back up and parking break signals. Anyway.. good luck I would still buy the av unit but.. if i had that on here in my hands I know i could make it work just as well.. Good find!

Simply because the Pioneer unit costs about 300 less for similar features.

The only problem I see with the Pioneer unit is that you'd have to get creative with the video output back to the stock navi lcd screen. This unit was designed to have a video feed going out to Pioneer lcd display units.

So the question is wether or not that part of the harness comes with the tuner module or must be bought on the side, if at all possible.

Also, the TV tuner antenna (AN-G3 boosted diversity antenna kit) is sold separately and costs about $100. So when all is said and done the complete package might end up costing the same.

thew 06-12-2004 12:51 PM

your just gonig to take the rca outputs and inputs and solder them into the 4 wires behind the stock nav dvd. Red, Green, Blue, and sync. I did not see a Sync wire from the Pioneer unit .. did i miss that ?

thew 06-12-2004 12:54 PM

sorrry my bad.. looks like there is the same amount of inputs and outputs.. they both give you 2 in and 2 out with the nav screen so really 3 outs. and 3 in :)

this looks beter all the time.. I just cant find that sync signal..

..... RGB Output for Front Display (AVX-P7000CD, AVX-7000, AVX-505 or AVD-505 required)....

This connection is probably what you would use for the RX-8 display - assuming this has the proper rgb+s signals.

Paul Schmitz 06-12-2004 06:18 PM

no prob guys.. i posted a few questions early about this but got no responses.. so i took things into my own hands.. i have almost all parts here..

why do i like it better than avelectronics?

ave = 525 pioneer = 200 if you find it in the right place..

my second reson why is i called avelectronics and they were not very helpful for me.. i felt like i was calling a home depot asking about getting car parts.

i have nothing agianst them, they may even offer a better box, i personally havent had much luck with them. im sure they put out a quality product and offer good tech support, just i was dealt a bad hand.

ill let you guys know how it comes out! i have all the parts almost even though i have the 3 and not the rx-8. ill also get my girlfriends camera and make an install guide.

wish me the best of LUCK!

can anyone confirm that we defiantly have rgbs monitors.. and the s being the sync has both the horizontal and vertical?

GiN 06-12-2004 07:01 PM

The signals coming out of the dvd navi unit are rgbs. According to the official wiring schematics, they go straight to the lcd screen with no intermediate devices. Therefore it's relatively safe to say the lcd screen uses composite rgbs signals.

I'm not really sure what the single-wire composite sync signal consists of, but it's a common standard.

w00t!

thew 06-12-2004 11:35 PM

yes RGB.. like i said before...
this unit will work just fine. in fact i dont think it wants to see a parking break signal.. but it also wont turn on automaticly when you shift into reverse for the backup or rear view camera. but its still a good deal.. I really wanted the Rearview camera.. Its cool when i shift into reverse my lcd pops up and shows me the rearview camera :)

Kel Rx8 06-13-2004 01:13 AM

I am installing my dvd player today.. So far so good realy easy cause i am mounting it in the trunk behind the pass thur compartment. so you can open it up and access the player. I/R reciver is mounted in the mp3 player slot behind the blank. I drilld holes in it and the will cover it with a peice of tint.. it looks great i did a test run last night.

I am also mounting my V1 radar remote in that spot to ..

Mazda3ndp 06-13-2004 09:55 PM

hey rx8mywallet... your using the same setup that im using? if so maybe we could chat on aim or aol im having a few thoughts.. well more questions.. maybe you could help me find an answer or if you have any questions maybe i can help you.. my aol name is mazda3ndp..

in particular in the directions on the site its asking for the ground/shield wire.. which one is that on the vga cable.. 1,2,3 are the coaxial video ones.. then 11 and 15 are something else but in the instructions it wants the ground shield wire, i looked up a vga pin layout and im clueless.. anyhelp anyone?

thew 06-13-2004 09:58 PM

ok.. theres a big fat black wire on the oem dvd unit.. thats the shelided ground hook up the avelectronics shelded ground and any dvd ground you have hook to that source.. hook all the other grounds to the chassie some where.

P.S. i am only on MSN messanger.. under thew@sbcreative.com

thew 06-13-2004 10:02 PM

ok this is a pic of the 2nd connector on the back of the OEM DVD player.
Find the Red wire with the Yellow stripe.
Thats the Backup light signal. you can tap into that to feed the avbox blue wire (backup light).

Remember to give your camera power to.. but dont power it off the backup light circut unless you dont want to turn it on while driving foward!

if so it needs power all the time, so hook it into the power feed for the avbox.

Btw you can see the isolated ground here to. its 3a .
