3-D view Navigation?

my friend was telling me that navs for some other cars have a more 3-d view on the roads instead of having just a mapquest look to it. i was wondering if anyone knows anything about that and if it's just a matter of getting an updated disc for it.

you can go into a 3d mode with the rx-8 navi. No need for a special disk.

I've personally found that mode useless.

I would concur. On the RX-8 you simply need to hit the POS button a second time to switch from the normal overhead map view to a "3D-view". Mine spends all of it's time at about 1/8th mile scale on the normal map view.

actually, that part i knew about and you're right, it's pretty useless. i was actually talkin about having an overhead view but in 3-d mode.

I believe the Japanese Navs have this 3-D view you mentioned. The US models definitely don't. Maybe it's due to Japan being smaller and it takes less data/memory to do a small place than to try to map out the entire US in 3-d.

i'm pretty sure that the 350z's nav is like that so i'm pretty sure the US is capable of that.

Does anyone have a picture of the 3-D nav view??

The nissan nav has a mode that's similar to the 3d stuff, but it's not comprehensive topos or anything. I think it just has a few of the main buildings in a city. Go to www.navteq.com and check out the future of what they're working on. I sent an email yesterday asking if these future options would ever become available for existing navs, but I haven't gotten a reply yet.
