No plans for Hobbes. It might seem strange since they were inseparable. But, that pic is from one of Calvin's flights of fancy where he's by himself enjoying the wonders he'll behold once he gets his wonderful motorized "propeller beanie" from mail order. Of course, for a 6-year old the realilty of "please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery" is devastating and it's agony as he waits for his beanie to arrive. Much like myself as I wait for my RX-8 :D

Disposable camera so the pictures are crappy. this is the pearl voodoo knob I just put on. Feels like its made for the car. *Perfectly* matches the pearlish trim where the carpet meets the shift panel and the trim around the shift boot. No gap at all between the knob and the boot. Install took less than a minute :D

Very happy with the purchase, best $40 I've spent in a long while. Felt like a steal. Has a nice weight, great feel.

I found my black crinkly-finish voodoo knob while prowling around in the garage last week (I had forgotten I had it - pulled the knob off the Miata before I sold it) and tried it on the 8. It fits perfectly. After driving around with it for a few days I'm really impressed and amazed that it makes as much difference as it does. As Xlorn's pic demonstrates, the voodoo is much lower than the stock knob, and makes me feel connected to the car in a way I didn't before. It just snicks right along, feels right in my hand, and looks great with the 8's matte black interior.

Caveat - it's the knob I drove with for six years before I got the 8, so I reckon it would feel right to me. YMMV. I love the look of the stock knob, but this one just feels better.

Ned M 02-27-2004 05:17 PM

I had a Voodoo knob on my Contour SVT and it made a huge difference for me because the solid aluminum transmits much better feel of what's going on in the xmission as you shift.

I'm considering a Voodoo for the RX-8, but am more interested in their pistol grip style, if it will still result in a little shorter throw. For that it has to be shorter than the stock RX-8 knob.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the length of the Voodoo pistol grip vs. the stock RX-8 knob?

Thanks,

God of Thunder 03-03-2004 01:45 PM

Just installed my pearl voodoo today. I absolutely love it! The finish makes it look like it was stock.

Nubo 03-21-2004 01:45 AM

I got my Voodoo knob back from engraving today; it's the final piece for getting the interior the way I wanted. One last plug for The Knobmeister

My Voodoo shift knobs

Went to Performance Plus Automotive Imports in Etobicoke, and picked up 2 Voodoo shift knobs. BTW, Lex at Performace Plus was GREAT, excellent guy to deal with.

1 pearl (powdercoated) normal size knob
1 spun pistol grip knob

See pic to compare sizes. The standard RX shift knob is heavy compared with the Voodoos.

Enjoy. I like the pearl knob, and will be using that.

AcuraEL 05-03-2004 10:18 PM

Installed pistol grip.

AcuraEL 05-03-2004 10:19 PM

Installed ball knob. Just used it, and I like it.

God of Thunder 05-04-2004 05:52 AM

That's what a have (the pearl ball :D ) and I love it.

Thanks very much for the comparison pic! I'll be getting the knob rather than a pistol grip after seeing that.

Just got my Pearl Voodoo shift knob yesterday, and I can't believe what a difference it has made in my shifting enjoyment! I've always been a little underwhelmed by the feel of the RX-8 shifter, especially since my last manual tranny was in a Miata. It just never felt as smooth or "snick snick" as the Miata was. As others have described it, I think it had kind of a rubbery feel.

Well, I never thought simply changing the shift knob would make this much difference. It's much smoother now, a much more mechanical feel. And of course, it's a shorter throw with this knob, which is very nice.

Not to mention the fact that the Pearl finish perfectly matches the "aluminum" look trim in the interior! It's just gorgeous.

Before now, I often thought it was a shame that people were changing the stock shift knob - Mazda really did a nice job with the look/design of it. But now I know why. If you're on the fence about doing this, by all means go for it!! My stock shift knob makes a really cool RX-8 related paperweight.

I have the exact same one...I love it. I do love the stock shift knob, but my wife's wedding ring scratched it up, so I got this knob so I won't further damage the stock one. They cost like $250 new.

What I liked about the Voodoo knob is that it is a direct fit knob with no POS set screws, and it is a very simple ball...I love it.

RPIRX-8 05-17-2004 10:36 PM

I've got the Polished Aluminum and I love it, wouldn't trade it for the world. Well, except for possibly the Pearl Magnum VooDoo knob :) I want to try that one too. Seriously tho, the throws are so short it makes it so much more fun to drive.

santino 05-17-2004 11:40 PM

i prefer the magnum voodoo knobs...your palm literally can rest on it. plus the added mass makes the shifting feel even better.

OK it's early, but help me out here. How, logistically, did your wife's wedding ring scratch the stock shift knob? I'm trying to picture it. Your address indicates you live in the States. Am I missing something?

mdmaclean 05-18-2004 05:54 AM

I like my pearl shift knob, but it is lighter than the stock one. I wish that you could get a Voodoo knob in stainless steel (or probably regular steel), so that you could get the pearl look along with more weight.

Mikelikes2drive 05-18-2004 12:03 PM

i still dont see why the voodoo shift knob looks so great. i believe the stock looks the best IMO but thats me and i need help

loco4rx8 05-18-2004 03:06 PM

It's more about the function of the Voodoo knob than what it looks like. Looks are subjective. I like the look of the stock knob, but I also like the look of the Voodoo knob in its own right.

However, if you tried actually shifting with the Voodoo knob, you'd know right away that it feels better. That, to me, is more important than looks.

God of Thunder 05-18-2004 03:33 PM

How 'bout making our own? I've got a few designs going, got the go ahead from some buddies. How does T-7071 billet on a Hardinge CNC, stainless threadserts with hard anodizing sound? I bet we could bring the price down with the quantities...

I would be interested, especially if it was round like the Voodoo, but heavier. I would also like it if it was slightly larger.

Preacher 05-29-2004 07:06 PM

I'll have mine Tuesday or Wednesday, great service over there, will post pics....magnum pearl knob.....

They do make the Magnum sized Voodoo Knobs...which is what i prefer as well. More weight makes it feel better.

I have the magnum one, and I do like it more than the stock one. If you compare it to the stock, the Voodoo is definitely lighter. I would just like to have it heavier, perhaps made of steel instead of aluminum.

mitchfried 11-05-2004 07:39 PM

My son had an aluminum Voodoo in his Protege5 and it was HOT in the summer Florida sun. Does the titanium run cooler?

loco4rx8 11-05-2004 08:31 PM

I have the regular aluminum and really don't have a problem, but I have heard that the titanium is cooler as it doesn't conduct heat as easily. Much more expensive though. If you keep the knob shaded, it really isn't an issue. Just put a hat or glove or something over it if the car is going to be sitting in the sun. And always keep your windows cracked just an inch or so. That really helps the hot air escape and makes more of a difference than you'd think.

mitchfried 11-05-2004 09:17 PM

A knob condom, perhaps? Let me tell you, that aluminum Voodoo in the summer could fry an egg.

I've got a Greddy shift knob. It's weighted and feels pretty good. I'll get pics soon.

success07 12-27-2006 10:25 PM

I'm bringing a thread back from the dead.

Most of you that have purchased the Voodoo shift knob have purchased the pearl finish.

Has anyone purchased the spun finish? Is there a comparison somewhere?

I've seen pics of the two different knobs and I'm just trying to get an idea of maybe how different they might feel. Will the pearl get slippery at all with a full day of driving in the warm weather? Will the spun leave oil prints from your hands because it doesn't have the coating of the pearl?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

I don't have the spun finish, but I guess I could post a pic of my black piano voodoo shift knob if anyone is intersted.

Dro 12-28-2006 07:36 AM

Ive had the pearl magnum for more than 6 months now and I still LOVE it. It is VERY sexy and matches the rest of the silver in the interior perfectly. Its a great addition to any RP short shifter hehe

bruce_van 12-28-2006 12:47 PM

I had a chrome Voodoo knob in my Miata years ago. Felt great.

Thanks for posting the pics of the piano black as I have been considering one of these to compliment the piano black trim in the Shinka. Is the knob pictured the larger size VooDoo knob? It seems a bit bigger in diameter than I remember.

:naughty: Well, we do need something to do on those long drives.

Seriously, the finish is worn on the silver part on the left side of the triangle near the point. I noticed that when I am driving around casualy I have a tendancy to shift into 3rd and 5th by simply using my thumb to move the shifter. Hitting that exact spot so much has worn through the finish. I like the look of the rotor knob that I doubt I will go to something different. Maybe the Mazdaspeed knob.

redcivic 12-28-2006 06:58 PM

Wow, the piano black looks sweet.
