Underbody front cover thing thingy ?
 

So you can read about my luck in the 8 discussion section, and if you do, you will notice that I had a run-in with a shredded semi tire. :uhh:

It cracked my under-spoiler lip thing and has disfigured my front bumper cover. What I also noticed today is that the cover [?] underneath the front of the car that was attached to the front lip is also obliterated !

I am so tempted to purchase the MS front bumper and save up a little bit for the skirts but I am wondering if this piece will nead to be replaced as well ???

Please help, as I am in dire need of a bumper etc ...

is it the plastic underbody? if so yea would need to be replaced so things don't go up and damage the stuff in there.

Yeah its black, plastic, and it covers the underbody.

Well I guess I can thank that thing that there was no further damage underneath there. So that thing will match right up to the MS front bumper too huh ?

ive managed to destroy TWO of the underbody stone trays. the largest middle piece runs about $150 from the dealer if i remember correctly. i think the two side undertray pieces are like ~$60 each.

its b/c my car is so damn low with springs and MS front bumper. its like 3" off the ground. welcome to cali.

Yeah, I've been through one as well. Cracked the part that attaches to the bumper, so the rest was dragging. It was ok at high speeds, but at low speeds, it was very loud and embarrassing. You definitely want to get it replaced though. It protects quite a bit, including your radiator.

not only does it protect, the underbody tray actually guides air THROUGH the radiator instead of just passing from under the car, so it is an integral part of car's COOLING system.

better get it fixed!

^Yup, if you look, there are little vents on the tray.

My tray is cracked to shit. I suppose the good news is, I found a new A/C condensor for '05s for $169 and am receiving 1000 to fix my front bumper [ I will be adding the rest to ensure its a MAZDASPEED front bumper ] and will be paying for the condensor as well as the tray and all of the labor myself.

What a bitch life is right now.

Oh I forgot about this $210 ticket sitting in front of my, yay.

haha.. must side with the newb. weren't you lowered like 30mm? shouldn't have been a problem even with ms front since the ms front doesn't lower the underbody tray in anyway.

I lost my driver's side splash shield from hitting a tire on the freeway and the passenger side shield lost its screws and dragged the ground. only replaced the driver's side though since the passenger side holds up now with my kit back on.

im lowered 1.4 inches in front with a kit too and get around LA, OC, and SD fine. just have problems with scrapping coming from down places sometimes.

im confused. all i did was attempt to share my plight with some fellow board members in an effort to maintain a sense of humor (the cost to fix the two undertrays didn't thrill me or my wallet) about my situation.

maybe i really dont know how to drive. or maybe the consumption of a traditional korean side dish (which is very tasty by the way) causes me to inexplicably become unable to operate an automobile.

i just don't understand why that in a online forum created so that people all over the world can enjoy their experience of a wonderful car together there has to be nonsense like this.

Any time you join a public forum on the Internet, you're going to find some immature, small-minded little twerps who like to make nasty comments just to get noticed. Most people like that have the intelligence of a fruit basket. They're miserable little people who hate their own lives for whatever reason, and strike out against others (from the safety of their keyboard). It's silly to take them seriously. It's more appropriate to pity them. Do like most of us do and just ignore them.

You know someone should produce some carbon fibre plastic underbody tray thingi if noone has done so. I think it would sell, no?

i usually do ignore them.......except in the rare case when 2 of their first 3 posts are aimed directly at comments i have made on the board, the latter of which involves my nationality for some odd reason.

Most companies only make those for certain cars like subarus becuse a lot of people rally prep them. They are commonly made of aluminum though, although I could see using a carbon fiber/kevlar combo for resistant to penetration and the weight. Probably not very cost effective though as the aluminum ones are around 200.. cant immagine was a molded CF one would be.

Part of the problem are the stock bolts holding the undertray on suck. They come loose quite easily. I would recommend checking on them occasionally.

Does anyone think the underbody panels are covered under warranty? My screws came undone on the main and the side piece got all ripped up.

hmmmm, they may consider it road hazard. but if you can prove it was the fault of the screws coming loose i dont see why you would have any problems ... why dont you give your local friendly service manager a call ?

i agree u should get a new one to replace it. mine ripped too and im about to get it put on with my new MS front bumper. The piece isnt just a shield on the bottom but it goes up on both sides.

i would mention everything else but seems like people already covered it all.

I had the underbody piece rip off also unfortunately the wheel wells are connected to it so when you lose one, the others arent far behind, and I couldn't get the dealer to cover it unfortunately cause for some reason that plastic is very expensive. I could make a complete underbody tray out of carbon fiber, unfortunately due to the shortage at the moment cf is very expensive, and hard to find, also I don't really know much about the aerodynamics involved in an undertray so someone in the know would have to come up with a design, but actually making the part I can do, I was actually thinking of makeing the original one piece in cf and placing more mounting points for a bit more safety of the piece.

Yeah I too was thinking of the same thing, I started a thread a while ago about ideas of designing a undertray that doesn't screw up aerodynamics. The thread didn't get far though, heat was a major concern.

I don't know why heat would be a concern, yes the exhaust would heat up a little more, so wrap it with some DEI heat wrap, problem solved, you could also put a heat reflector for the side that faces the trans, and other heat producing components, and add small intakes and outlets for the air in the undertray to help release/push out hotter air.
