To those who upgraded from Halogen to HID...

I've purchased two HID kits now, and in both the bulb is too short so when you clamp the connector back down into place the bulb is free to move around. The light output is garbage as a result of this.

How did you modify the HID bulb to fit into the housing? Every thread I've searched for and read states that everyone did something, or added something to, the H7 bulb so that it stays in place but never mentions how they did it. Some work right out of the box, others don't. So far I've only found the ones that don't apparently.

I know the MTEC kit is the only one out there that was specifically designed for the RX-8, but given the money I've already spent on these damn lights that just sit in my bedroom I'd rather not buy another set.

If it's mentioned in one of the many HID threads then my apologies, I've just yet to find it. I'm not saying it's not there, just that there are so many that I didn't see it in the ones I looked through.

Thanks in advance!

I used to have Halogen headlights and converted to HID. I didn't have to modify anything at all. I just removed the halogen bulbs and replaced it with the kit. The HID bulbs should fit the exact same way as the halogen. Most people talk about going through the fender well to insert the lights. My first go at this caused my light output to be completely retarded - I think you're having the same problem I did. I discovered that if I remove my front bumper completely and remove the headlight housing I have easy access to my parking lights and headlights. In fact, I'll be removing my headlights tonight to replace one of my burnt out parking lights.

Hope this helps!

I've used the Apexcone HID kit in my RX8 in both the 55 watt and now the 35 watt and I've have to perform zero modifications to anything to get it to work.

Provided the bulb type matches it should be a complete bolt on system.

hey,

I've been thinking about converting to hid and did a bit of research. What you need for it to fit as well as the halogen light is H7 spacers. They are the same type of spacer that already comes connected to the wiring which plugs in to the back of the halogen lights, except that the ones for HID's have the guts ripped out of it to accommodate for the HID's which have their own wiring.

Theses guys sell them:
http://www.dabears2k.com/product_inf...roducts_id=207

Some people make their own spacers from high density foam etc.

I'm interested to see what the beam pattern looks like once you get them fitting properly as I'm still tossing up whether to drop in a hid kit, so if you could post pics, that would be awesome.

I don't mean to hijack this thread (hopefully i answered the OP's question anyway), but can someone who's dropped in hid's into the halogen housing show some pics of their beam pattern on the road?

Huh?

An H7 is an H7. There are not any H7 kits that are sort of H7 but need spacers. HID conversion kits...key word "conversion" are designed to incorporate HID bulbs into a halogen housing.

Do NOT buy anything from dabears2k.com. Matt has a long history of being banned from forums for selling bogus product.

If you bought an H7 HID kit and it doesn't fit then either your kit is junk or your bought the wrong bulb type.

Maybe there is different versions of the rx 8's headlights for different countries, but I know for a fact that in the stock halogen set up for the australian rx 8, it already has spacers for the halogen bulbs (which many other cars don't have), hence when you buy a H7 HID kit, it will be the right size shape for most cars using H7s WITHOUT spacers. The halogen spacers wont work for the HID's, so you have to buy specific HID spacers (the link I posted before). Granted, some higher quality HID kits come with the spacers for you to put on.

Check this thread and read carefully, it also tells of the spacers you need.

I'm sure you can find the spacers from a more reputable dealer than the dabears2k.com site, I just did a google search and picked the first one.

Thats the kit you want. just sell the one you have and buy this one. Its direct plug in. no modifications needs to be done. I had this kit for 2 years and not a problem at all.

So these are spacers... I thought these were the actual H7 bulb fitment or shape, these are already included in the DDM H7 hid kits in that case ._.'
The DDM kits are actually cheaper directly from their website. Even though i didnt buy the H7 kit directly from them (DDMTuning), but instead from therpmstore, so the "spacers" are ready included. I wonder if its default for DDM kits to include them.

Hate to revive this old thread, but having the same issues here. I grabbed the H7 hid "conversion" from DDM (therpmstore). Bulb doesn't have a "spacer" so inserting the bulb in the housing (it is notched correctly, so you know its an H7) it isn't held on by the retaining clip..... thoughts??

Aipex8 09-08-2010 10:27 PM

My g/f's Mazda3 uses H7 halogen headlights also, when I had to replace a bulb there was a plastic piece that I had to pry off the old bulb and put on the new. Maybe there is something similar on the 8's bulbs? Just a guess as I have stock HIDs.

Weird, send them an email and see if they do something about it, these should have been included. Maybe they will send them to you for free as they are needed.

Actually, now that you mention it, the original h7s do have spacers, but they are what connect the bulb to the cable. They have pins :[ he would have to cut the inner plastic part with a dremel, so as to have an inner canal through which run the hid cable.

The spacers thing makes PERFECT sense. That would allow them to work.

Huh, I may actually try to do something with them now. They've just been sitting in the basement collecting dust since I made this thread. lol

+1, I bought my HID kit from them and it's been working great for a solid 6 months now

The next time we get together, I'll be interested in hearing the details and seeing the results. Until then...

Digging up an old thread so I don't have to start a new one...

I just got my vvme kit in today and it didn't come with the spacers, so I just ordered some from ebay. I had bad luck with ddm's in the past and didn't want those again.

Now my question...where can I get the plug adapter to connect the hids to the stock socket? You know how you just take the 2 wire prongs and insert them into the stock plug...well I've seen some where before someone selling a oem type plug that you insert those to hid wires into then clip that into the factory harness so you get a good, water tight seal. Anyone know what I'm talking about can help me out??

http://i.ebayimg.com/14/!C!2!,p!!mk~...Gdew~~0_12.JPG
see where the 2 wires are loose and you would just insert those into the factory harness...but they make a oem style plug to insert them into then you just plug that into the factory plug.

Soooo sorry for the necro

I searched all over the forums but can't find what I'm looking for. Im too new to post a new thread (been lurking in the shadows soaking up all this great info for several weeks now) so im sorry for my attempted hijack of this somewhat related thread but I cant drive to work tomorrow (night) without headlights. Maybe I just don't know how to word it but anyhow. The original owner of my 2004 was less than a genius and managed to misplace the rubber cap and spring while breaking the light housing to the low lights. I went to a salvage yard that had a 2004 and managed to get a replacement set of headlight assemblys. Here is the problem I have there is an orange connection that is not on my current lights that powers the low beams, what I am assuming are HID lights (premium package) vs my halogens. Is there a way to make this work? I'll add some pics here if I can to show you what I mean. Top is the new light and bottom is the old.https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx8...710c3e9d22.jpg

Side note I really appreciate this site for helping me fix about 10 random things on my 04 this is the first time I been stumped on a site search, you guys are awesome! Oh besides the part where I cant find a diy on replacing the A/C compressor. Off toppic but this is my first rotary and loving ever minute. Thanks in advance for your help!

is an LED Conversion worth it? or will I blind everyone on the road?

LEDs basically just became a viable option for our cramped sealed housings. Nothing bright enough would fit before. VLEDS just came out with a 3000 LM bulb that is small and cool enough to work in sealed housings. I'm actually going to be converting my HIDs soon.

Projectors have cutoff shields so you don't blind people (even halogen projectors).

Blinding others wouldn't be an issue, but you'd be blinding yourself.

The beam pattern won't be very optimal.

You would need the ballast transformers that go on the other end of the shiny metal cables, no big problem there.
The orange connectors are for the levelling motors - the HID '8 is a complicated animal that has sensors on the front & rear suspension, and a control computer that sets the level for the beam.

The wiring is on page 52 of the electrical diagrams, you'd have to put 12v to the larger wires on the connector (the small ones are the feedback sensor) and set yourself a 'rough' level to leave it at.

Looks like a simple PnP swap on my halogen/non-leveling system?
