Rear flares installed wrong...
So, i suppose i deserve this for being lazy for once in my life.... (I had a shop install them)
https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18489 https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18490 So, do you think its worth the risk of bending the peice or ruining paint to adjust this? Now im sure 90% of the people on this forum (including me) are paranoid about crap like this and tbh its sad that they couldnt put it on right... but im not sure i trust them taking it off themselves, because obviously they dont know very much. |
I put my own on......
Took hours working out the 'right' place to drill the single hole to hold them on - used the paper template, measured five different ways, then drilled. Took a light to the inside by the muffler, to attach the clip to the bolt, and THERE IS A MARK on the inside to show you EXACTLY where to drill......... DOH! S |
How bad does it look? How exactly was it installed?
|
Its installed like three quarters of an inch too high, and stealth I know I should have installed it myself but I painted calipers on Monday and wasn't in the mood to work on another car project. Lazy yes I know and I'm tempted to fix this but I'm worried about the double sided tape ruining the paint if I attempt to take it off
|
usually a heatgun will help you with that
|
Ya, the plan was to heat it up and use a fishing line and run it through, but im still worried of paint damage, idk why.
|
it will not damage paint. use goo gone to take off excess.
|
Removing the tape is a bitch. I have done it before. First, TAKE YOUR TIME!!!!!!!! It's a slow process. The fishing line works. Then the leftover, start with your finger just "rolling it" meaning, dont pick at it with your finger nail, just kinda try and roll it into a ball in the direction of the tape. Once you got off as much as your finger will take, then goof off. The one for latex paint, not the acetone based one. That one will eat the paint. Taking your time and not freaking out, it will come off without a scar.
FYI just took off my friends rear lip and it had about 10 miles of the grey 3m tape. Our fingers were raw! |
so, if i were to move this, it would also require another screw hole correct? this doesnt bother me because i dont plan on taking it off ever again haha.
|
Yes. It is clearly marked on the inside with a +. Also, the best way to do this is remove the wheel, remove the exhaust shroud (you know, the one that turns grey or white, LOL) so you can clearly see where this goes. Its not hard, again, everything comes out right with patience.
|
Ok thanks a bunch for the help, i will make up my mind by sunday, and if i decide to move it i will post up some before/after pics.
|
I installed the rear aero flares on 2 separate RX8s I've owned WITHOUT drilling that hole (I cut the tab off the flare so it sits flush to the car) and I've never had any issue with them detaching from the car. The tape will hold just fine as long as you properly prepare the surface with alcohol.
|
Alright, so i decided to go through with this project. Thanks to you guys i was able to find the mark that shows where to drill (i decided to drill it just for peace of mind mostly). Right this moment i have the pieces off and tomorrow i am going to go searching for some replacement tape that i could use, and i will put them on and post up some pics. I am just amazed that the guy was unable to do this properly... after doing it myself i am seeing that it is incredibly easy to do. *lesson learned*
|
Sucks to hear you had a bad experience
Glad it workout for you in the end man. "If you want something done right you got to do it yourself" :) At least it wasn't something more involved that they messed up installing All in all I'm glad it worked out for you |
This thread fails without pics...
|
Post some pics so we can see your handy work.
:D: |
Ok here are some pics to hold you guys over :P
https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18591 i love how his hole is like an oval because he was trying to get it in the right spot... but he was acctually way off. https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18590 distance shot https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18592 Now notice how the glue barely is altered on the bottom part? Thats because i found it incredibly easy to remove the glue due to the face that it was improperly placed. https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18593 top part was a bit more difficult, but still easy none the less. https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18594 edit: note that the black specs on my bumper is not the double sided tape, but instead tar that i am too lazy to take care of. |
It must be a ghost pic... I dont see it. LOL Anyone? Someone?
|
my album is set to private (i just put random pics in there) I had 2 pics in the first post too, hang on let me change the album to public and see what happens.
edit: how about now? |
I hope you got your money back. that was a piss poor installation by that shop.
|
WOW... :SHOCKED:I cant believe it. Holy Cow!!!!!!!! :wallbash: Now how about one with them on correctly. I would have killed the shop and honestly, made them do it the rightway. People never cease to amaze me.
|
haha im assuming they are working now ^_^
and i still have not put them back on, i only have the holes drilled and am in the process of taking the excess tape off the flares. Hopefully i can get them on tonight but may end up being tomorrow. edit, hey rota if you have a picture of yours (which are on corrctly) you should post it up just to let me double check. |
No problem. I just looked and i dont have any close up ones. Even if i crop it and blow it up you cant get what you are looking for. I will take some when it stops raining. Today or tomorrow so you can see. I actually did the whole appearance package on it.
NOTE: when you go to put it on with the new 3m tape make sure you wipe the surface down, where the tape is going to make contact, with alcohol. This will make sure the surface is clean promote good adhesion and you don’t have to worry about hem getting loose or coming off. This is why it came off easily. The 3m tape is REALLY HARD to get off when its done right. |
ok So i have completed my task of fixing a shops mistake :)
It is still not completely flush with the exhast shroud but im not positive its supposed to be, is so o well because it is 100% better then what it looked like before (no more gap) pics are blurry due to my cell phone pic quality https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18631 https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18630 https://www.rx8club.com/picture.php?...ictureid=18630 |
Looks spot on. Mine looks the same. As i said, i will post some pics today if the weather holds.
