Pics of my painted badges(and how I did it)

I decided to paint my badges black after seeing some good photos of dyed ones. Here are some pics of the front and rear badges, the rear mazda one is black too, just not in the picture. I removed the badges with a credit card and a blow dryer, then sanded the badges down for about 5 minutes a piece with a sanding block and then painted with Krylon Black Vinyl Dye spraypaint, about ten very light coats (overkill), and then about three or four coats of clear coat spray paint. I used semi-gloss, I might change it up to glossy, but I am going to get some dark colored rims and I will see how well the colors will match up.

That looks great nice job

looks great, after the 4th time i started getting careless with mine and they look shitty now. i gotta completely re-do them and buy a new front emblem.

I used a silicon rubbery glue stuff that i found in my Dad's garage. I tried it on an inconspicuous spot and it didn't pull the paint off the car, I'll try to get a picture or name of it, it came in a tube for a caulking gun.

I have glossy on my SS.... I think it sets it off better, plus i have black Enkei LS-5 wheels

but still looks good!!!

boarderjosh10 10-15-2009 01:39 PM

I think I might go glossy after the winter and see how these hold up

Fortunate Few 10-15-2009 01:48 PM

its all about flat black :) matches my rims better.

9krpmrx8 10-15-2009 01:51 PM

Looks good.

RotaryMachineRx 11-15-2009 01:28 PM

How does the paint hold up, have you had any chipping or wearing on them, or do they look just as good as when you painted them? Do they hold up in the Car wash?

The paint holds up really good! I have had mine done for about 8 months now and it still looks like I just did it.

boarderjosh10 11-16-2009 11:28 PM

yea my paint is holding up really well, it rained for about two weeks straight (minnesota fall) and the badges are still fine, I think I am going to see how well they do over winter and then I am going to take them off and repaint them and make them higher gloss, they are not that glossy right now and this was my first attempt so I am sure I can make them look even better.

Ah I see, winter shouldn't be a problem for me as I garage it over the winter months... and i'd most likely be going matte black with mine

gh8st 11-18-2009 11:20 AM

looks good. your front emblem's gonna have chip marks in a bout a day or two :) can't really do anything about it.. haha

boarderjosh10 11-18-2009 01:21 PM

actually the front emblem has been doing pretty well so far, I am going to try and take a picture of the badges again so that people can see what a month in the rain will do to them (not much).

RotaryMachineRx 05-19-2010 01:20 PM

Is there holes under the badge on the front bumper or is it adheared on as well?

Bullitt 05-19-2010 01:23 PM

Yes, holes on front.

Nice photos. I think it is the best color to have that darker color. I like it so much. I should do the same thing in my car. :)

Chrishoky 11-16-2010 06:13 PM

Hey I want to do this, what did you use to readhere the rx-8 emblem? what kind of tape do you use?

Bullitt 11-16-2010 06:19 PM

I used the thin, black 3M tape. Got it at Pep Boys.

Mazurfer 11-16-2010 07:00 PM

Looks good, I did basically the same thing and used pretty much the same as you did.
I left the RX-8 off the back of mine however as I have the RX-8 in the high brake light position...........and as Bullit just said, I also used the Black thin 3M tape to re-adhere them.

Oh.............instead of the credit card and blow dryer, just use dental floss!
Works like a charm, just kinda use it as a saw as you work your way across.

I also think the secret here is quite a few light coats of clear afterwards.
Being in sunny, hot, and wet Florida, I know I had to use it and did.
Mine have been done for about 8 months and no issues.
