Painting Badges?
 

hey everyone. i drive a 40th Anniversary 8 and just love the color. i think it would look absolutely sick if the M badges were black. i just received my black wheels and plan to get black corners as well. im curious if the removal and painting of the badges could be done personally so i dont have to spend more money for someone else to do it. also i have a stupid carmax sticker on the back. any good ideas on how to remove it. thanks everybody! looking forward to great info!

Dental floss to remove and some citrus cleaner to remove the glue

^............I think that says it all. Not much to add except go look up which ones have post and which do not. Whoops, if only the "M" badges, then they will have posts.

Use Advanced Search and put in "Badge Removal".
Then after that...........search for "Painting Badges".

Yep, floss works like a champ! I prefer mint green.........I'm kidding, just use any old dental floss in a sort of sawing motion.

haha i might use a peppermint...perhaps add a little heat with a hair dryer?

i would use a hair dryer or better yet a heat gun. when i tried dental floss, it kept breaking when i was about 2/5ths of the center of the emblem. a slight glimpse of heat will do the trick.

if it was summer time, just park it out in the sun for a little bit, that should work.:cwm27:

a thin fishing line is a lot easier to use since they don't break as easily...

I ordered a pare of badges to replace the "M" in the front and in the back and I've heard from some people that the remove the old ones you only have to heat it and dental floss it, but i also heard that the trunk lining and the front bumper need to be removed as well! does anyone one which one is right? and what would be the fastest and most effective way to do this procedure? your help would be greatly appreciated.

ALSO, HOW DO YOU POST NEW POSTS AND CATEGORIES ON THIS SITE? I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME! THANKS AGAIN.

I just painted mine black, and for me it wasn't as easy as everyone makes it seem. The 20 degree weather might have had something to do with it though...

I spent a good 2 hours at least and many many feet of floss to get them off. I ended up using a razor (which I would NOT recommend!) to try and slice through, and ended up with a few scratches in the paint. Eventually they came off, and then I spent another hour or so scraping all the old residue off.

The worst part by far though was putting new 3M tape on. The only stuff I could find here in Germany were tiny, 1/2" wide rolls, and it was really gummy stuff that didn't cut very well. It does look a little sloppy because I got impatient and didn't put in as much time as I should have, and I'm thinking of just ordering new emblems altogether.

Also, the paint is chipping a little bit in a few places, but overall its really good. I put on a good 4-5 coats. I just washed and waxed my car today and I'm gonna take pics tonight and tomorrow, I'll post them if you wanna see.

Let me know how you like those badges too, I was thinking about ordering some of those.

i ordered the black "mazda" and "flying m" badges off streetunit.com, they come in black with metallic chips in the paint and clear coat to match the metallic in the body paint. It took a while to ship and I'm waiting to get installed by a body shop when I get my eyelids/fender vents painted and installed, I'll post pics when I get around to doing it

so i put up the badges
 

i put them up, it wasn't as hard as I thought..took only about 45 min... i took a heat gun and i heated the life out of the "M" badges then after about 60 sec. it finally started to peal off. once the old ones came off, they were slightly melted and unusable. there was a lot of adhesive left over and i couldn't seem to get it off until i used a dab of gasoline and even with that it still didnt want to come off until i scrubbed not really as hard but as fast as i could.. the front and back had very spaced about holes where the "M" went and for a moment I didn't think it was going to fit w/o the holes being seen but thankfully, the new badges were a perfect fit at the right height! then, i took the rx-8 off which was fairly easy and didn't need much heating, neither did the "mazda" logo, and i finally put the rx8 logo over where the mazda logo used to be to cover the holes. it was a good fit, sturdy and looks sweettttttt..check the pics bellow
