Opinions on Hood and Front Bumper paint job

3 Attachment(s)
Well, I couldn't find any gray RX8's that look like I want mine to look like. I want mine to have the same paint scheme as Bunique's RX8 that he is selling. It is red with the black paint job all over the car. (Looks sick by the way).

And I was wanting to do something similar to my car. I have already debadged the back and painted the trunk black and smoked taillights completely dark. And the front I have smoked the heads and have eyelids and a body kit on the front.

So instead of doing a whole two-tone paint job on my car like Bunique's, I was wanting to just paint the hood and run the lines down onto the front bumper.

My car is grey, and so I was wondering if anyone has already done this to their car and I could see some pics before I drop $300 to do it. Or if anyone has seen one on the road that has it done?

Also, should I paint the whole hood black or should I leave that rotary triangle section of it grey like Bunique has done? And should I paint the bumper black down the middle all the way to the ground? ...or stop at the grill like Bunique has done?

Any advice/opinions/pics/info is appreciated!

Thanks!

(pics attached of Bunique's car and of mine so you better know what I'm talking about)

Buniques car is very nice, but its not the only one there are about a dozen+ 8 with that paint scheme... NYCDriftking used to have it go all the way down before his MS kit,,, ChrisM has had something simular too,,, there are a couple blues a couple orange I can think of. This paint job has also been translated into may bodykits as well, RE Amemiya, Veileside, MS, and a few others,,, It will look good as long as there is high contrast....

I would leave the rotar alone and not get it done, and if your questionable on it maybe you should just get a vinyl overlay, it will still look good and if you decide you dont like the scheme or wish to go back to stock it can come right off, not to mention it should be cheaper

Oh sweet, where can I get a vinyl overlay??

ummm most local custom commercial sign places should be able to do it

oh okay. I"ll try one today. hopefully it's not more than $40 or so. Cuz my body shop can paint my whole hood black for $125.

The reason that Bunique's car looks so good is because he did the two tone the correct way: by following a body line and carrying it through the whole car that way. The other way is to paint the whole hood and trunk black (or leave them CF if you have aftermarket parts) and then paint the roof section black and call it two tone. But to be honest it looks patchwork and not as good. If you paint the whole hood black you'll have to cary that line onto the bumper right next to the headlight and I think it will look awkward. Here's a quick photoshop of how I think you should do it. It might cost a bit more to have your paint guy tape it off, but I think it will look much better in the end even if you are just doing the hood.

listen to Aipex on the body lines, have them tape off your hood like he did in the photo shop, it will help with the flow

vndr09 03-09-2009 05:40 PM

Ya that's actually the exact thing I was trying to get mine to look like...except leaving the triangle in the hood gray...
And btw I tried a couple commercial places in town and the cheapest anyone said was $250. And my body shop quoted me $200 to paint the hood and down onto the front bumper just like Aipex8 has it! So i think I might just do that...

EXCEPT DO YOU GUYS THINK THE BLACK SHOULD CARRY DOWN A BIT FURTHER INTO THE GRILL?? If not, should I just stop it where the photoshop picture has it??? ...or somewheres else?

Thanks for the opinions/inputs

mscamp02 03-09-2009 06:08 PM

wow lol sorry about the commercial sign places go with paint for 200 cuz thats a pretty good quote. Im not sure if you should carry it down to the grill or not, try to get a photoshop all the way to the grill.

Money chop by Aipex8. I applaud him. In addition, what do you think about painting that corner piece that extends out? Make it look like a front diffuser. I don't know, just a thought.

Tim Tim Tim 03-10-2009 08:59 PM

id go all the way down to the grill personally

Rotr8 03-10-2009 09:02 PM

^^^ me too....

Ross_Dawg 03-10-2009 11:47 PM

I agree with RA-8; paint those bottom pieces to look like canards...

vndr09 03-11-2009 12:19 AM

Can anyone do a photoshop of the below picture with the black continuing down into the grill, and also having the corners that extend out on each side be black too? (or if anyone else has any other ideas...as crazy as they may be idc...ps them too!)

Fortunate Few 03-11-2009 01:42 AM

i like that ^^ it goes really well with his eyelid line.

vndr09 03-11-2009 01:53 AM

it's aight...i think i like the gray separation between the headlight and the black though...

but i still am wondering if anyone can do a ps of the black continuing all the way down into the grill from the hood??

vndr09 03-11-2009 01:58 AM

ahh, well now looking at 'em again for a longer time I actually might like nvrfalter's hood to bumper black out better...I'm just not sure if I should carry the black down into the grill yet...any ps's??

nvrfalter 03-11-2009 02:31 AM

i'll see if i can do it tomorrow. its 330 AM and i have class tomorrow morning ahah

vndr09 03-11-2009 02:37 AM

haha i got spring break!

mscamp02 03-11-2009 09:00 AM

I do like nvr's but I would still go with that separation on the hood

vndr09 03-11-2009 12:30 PM

Ya I'm still not sure what to do. But I just got a tigray hood for $40 this morning, so that'll give me some breathing room. That way I can have my guy paint it with the gray separation, and if I dnt like it, I can just have him black the separation as well...

Either way, ima have a hood to sell when I'm done with all this lol, but $40 I thought was a small investment just in case everything scrwd up and I wanted to just stay the way it is now...

pdxhak 03-11-2009 12:45 PM

I wonder with the mint blue front if carrying the black to the grill would not look as good. Since it is raised it may draw too much attention and take away from the overall look.

nvrfalter 03-11-2009 01:16 PM

i have no choice buy to agree with pdxhak. honestly im having a hard time finding a line to bring the black down to the mouth/grille. it just doesnt look good at the angle im working on. it looks like it could be fine if done from the angle aipex used but from the front theres not a good line to follow. ill try again.
